The GSX-8S is the senior machine of this family, on sale since 2023, and the one you now meet in a second role: a few have stopped being anybody's only motorcycle and been given over to track days, serviced by sessions rather than by kilometres. That change of regime is the question behind this element. The Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 moves 15,000 litres per square metre per second through an 85 micron weave, where the standard P08 passes 5,050 through 80 microns. More air comes through because the cloth is more open — a step backwards in filtration, taken on purpose, and worth taking only once the engine is looked after on running hours rather than on a service book.
Key Features
- The racing medium of the range: dry polyester at 85 microns, 15,000 l/m²/sec
- More open than the standard P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec — flow paid for in filtration
- No oil anywhere in it, so nothing can migrate onto the sensors or throttle bodies
- Sits in the unmodified series airbox; the fuelling stays as it is
- Regenerated with an air line rather than thrown away, for the life of the motorcycle
- Warranty: two years, counted from the day of purchase
When the service book turns into an hour meter
Race and track engines are opened on a schedule of hours. Under that regime a more open weave changes little: whatever gets past is taken out again at an overhaul that was already in the diary, and bearings and bores are inspected long before anything shows as a symptom. A GSX-8S that commutes and tours lives by the opposite logic — the bottom end is expected to reach a high mileage untouched, and nobody will ever look at what the intake has been doing. Decide honestly which life this bike leads, and let that pick the medium; if it will simply be ridden, the standard P08 in the same housing is the better buy.
Why 85 microns is not simply worse
Sprint Filter's own comparison figures complicate the picture usefully: against 100 micron test particles the F1-85 held back 95.22 per cent and the standard P08 93.13 per cent, while four-layer oiled cotton managed 76.42. A rating describes the aperture, not everything a weave catches. Below that particle size, though, the direction is the one the numbers suggest, and that is the part to stay sober about. The same bargain shapes the range: P14 at 14 microns and 1,800 l/m²/sec for dust, T12 at 7 microns and 560 for desert. Finer cloth keeps more out and lets less through; none of them outranks another.
Care and cleaning
Servicing the SM245S F1-85 means compressed air on the clean face, pushed out through the weave. After a dusty weekend, lukewarm water with a mild washing-up liquid is the next step, rinsed until clear. Leave the element in moving air until it is dry the whole way through — no heat gun, nothing near a flame — and fit it dry. No oiling stage. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
