DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 68004-80 is a pair of fork springs rated at 8.0 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 35.3 mm inner diameter. This is the change a suspension technician makes first, before touching a single click.

Key Features

  • Free length 300 mm
  • Inner diameter 35.3 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 68004-80
  • Supplied as a pair
  • 168 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 8.0 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Size and Rate

Free length 300 mm, inner diameter 35.3 mm, rate 8.0 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 8.0 N/mm

If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Fitting

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
