DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 08762-44 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4.4 N/mm, 465 mm long with a 43.0 mm inner diameter. Under braking a soft spring lets the fork run through its stroke and the geometry with it.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 4.4 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 08762-44
- Inner diameter 43.0 mm
- 300 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Free length 465 mm
- Supplied as a pair
Manufacture and Tolerance
The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.
Dimensions
At 465 mm free length and 43.0 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
Choosing 4.4 N/mm
Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. At this rate the fork sits deep in its travel under load, which is exactly what a long-travel chassis is designed around. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
Fitting
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
