DescriptionThe whole story▼
Two conditions before anything else. The passenger footpegs have to come off to fit this pipe, and it cannot be mounted on an R nineT equipped with an emissions canister. Either one rules the part out for some motorcycles entirely, and neither is visible on the shelf.
Key Features
- For the high-mounted muffler position, not the low one
- The passenger footpegs must be removed
- Will not fit an R nineT with an emissions canister
- Titanium, 2.6 kg against a standard 4.4
- EC and ECE type approved, plus US EPA
- 1.4 Nm more at 2,750 rpm, very low in the range
- Ninety minutes of workshop time
High or Low: Two Different Pipes
The R nineT can be built with the muffler high, alongside the seat, or low in the conventional position. Akrapovic makes a link pipe for each, and they are not interchangeable.
This is the high one. The low version is a different part number, weighs a kilogram less and takes a third of the time to fit, because it does not have to climb over the swingarm.
The Emissions Canister
Some R nineT machines, depending on market and year, carry an evaporative emissions canister. Where one is fitted, this pipe cannot be mounted — Akrapovic states that outright, and it is a hard incompatibility rather than a difficult fit.
Check under the seat and along the frame before ordering. A canister is a plastic cylinder about the size of a soft drink can, plumbed into the fuel tank breather.
The Passenger Footpegs
They come off and they do not go back. On a motorcycle many owners ride two-up occasionally, that is a real decision rather than a detail, and it is worth settling before the parcel arrives.
Approved, Which Is Unusual Here
A titanium link pipe that keeps EC and ECE type approval is not common. Most of the pipes in this catalogue are track parts. This one is road legal with no entry in the vehicle documents, which is what makes the fitting conditions worth working around rather than walking away from.
Torque Where an Air-Cooled Boxer Lives
Akrapovic records 1.4 Nm more at 2,750 rpm. That is remarkably low — below three thousand revs, in the part of the range where BMW's air-cooled twin does most of its work.
The recorded peak torque figure is 109.9 Nm against a standard 111, which is lower rather than higher. Both numbers come from the manufacturer and both are given here; the useful one is the gain down low.
Ninety Minutes
An hour and a half, which is long for a link pipe and follows from the routing: the pipe has to run up and over to reach a muffler mounted beside the seat. The footpeg removal is part of that work.
A Note on the Noise Data
Akrapovic's record for this part has its noise fields transposed, listing what is plainly an engine speed where the decibel value belongs. The intended reading appears to be 98 dB at 3,875 rpm, and it is given here as an indication rather than a verified figure.
Road Approval
EC and ECE type approved, plus a US EPA approval. No entry in the vehicle documents is required.
