DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Skwal i3 exists because Shark decided a helmet could do more than protect a head in an impact — it could also help prevent the impact from happening, through integrated LED brake lights front and rear reacting to the helmet's own deceleration. Shark's world-first claim for a production helmet applies here, in Vibetrack, worn as a deep blue shell (not black) with a silver and white diagonal stripe graphic across the flank.

How the brake light actually works

Deceleration is the trigger, not a switch on the bike: a three-axis accelerometer inside the shell drives the Skwal i3's rear red LEDs at three flashes a second for ordinary braking and five a second for hard braking, while white LEDs at the front handle forward visibility independently. Shark built the whole system to stand alone from the motorcycle's own electrics, which is also why it needs its own battery, covered next.

Wind noise, honestly

Two physical features do the noise-reduction work on the Skwal i3, according to an independent long-term review: a substantial neck roll at both sides and a generous chin curtain, closing the gaps that usually let wind and noise through at the base. The same review found noise levels not unduly loud and no single localised source — and no decibel figure exists anywhere in the sources used for this helmet.

Vibetrack: the shell you're actually choosing

a deep blue shell (not black) with a silver and white diagonal stripe graphic across the flank under a gloss coat is what arrives in the box — a brighter, more reflective look than the matte decors in this range, provided it's kept clean.

The everyday commuter, not the occasional weekend rider, is who this decor is really built for — the brake light's entire value proposition depends on riding often enough, in traffic often enough, for it to matter.

Fit across the size run

The Skwal i3 runs six sizes, XS to XXL. Whatever the internal shell-mould count is, we haven't found it confirmed for this specific helmet, so we're not printing a guess — use the size chart to find your size.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

This helmet's €349.99 makes more sense next to its stablemates: Ridill 2 from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 from €219.99, Skwal Cup from €269.99 to €339.99 without an LED, and the Skwal i Cup from €329.99 — the only other Shark road helmet built with the same light system.

Spare parts, later

Shark didn't design a one-off visor for the Skwal i3 — it's VZ400, the same family fitted to the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, Pinlock 70 insert included, meaning replacement parts stay available as long as any of those five models are in the range.

What this helmet does not have

A closing honesty check, the same one we'd want before spending this much on a helmet: no SHARP star rating exists for the Skwal i3 itself, only for the older Skwal and Skwal 2 (four stars each, a different helmet). ECE 22.06 with no FIM suffix. No MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic compatibility. A micrometric buckle, not a double-D ring. And, weighed carefully rather than glossed over: the LED brake light's legal status on German public roads is not confirmed anywhere in this research. Shark's manual routes the rider back to their own country's legislation instead of asserting compliance, carries no E-mark for the light, and no independent source fills that gap either.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

Nothing about the power system needs a tool or a spare part: the battery is sealed in, refilled over USB-C in roughly three hours for about twelve hours of flashing-light runtime, and the cable itself lives inside the neck protection rather than trailing loose. It manages its own standby, sleeping after 60 seconds without movement and shutting down fully after 72 hours idle. A near-empty charge, per the manual, still lets the system switch on before it turns off again almost instantly — the only way back is the charger.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

There's a reason ECE 22.06 became mandatory for new EU helmets in January 2024 rather than staying optional: it tests eighteen impact points against the old standard's five, at multiple speeds instead of a single fixed one, adds an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil, and scores rotational forces through a Brain Injury Criterion the earlier version never measured. Every Skwal i3 meets it, tested complete with visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit. The certificate carries no FIM suffix — 2206 alone, meaning this is road approval, not a racing homologation.

Shell, closure and ventilation

Some helmets in this price range still use a double-D ring; the Skwal i3 doesn't. Its micrometric buckle ratchets to a precise, repeatable tension and releases with a single pull, sitting on a shell of Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner. Ventilation runs on a multichannel layout — front intakes, rear extractors — counted independently at four and two.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

Weight numbers on a spec sheet rarely say which size they're measuring, which is why Shark's own clarification matters here: 1,570 g is for the Skwal i3's first, smallest shell, a figure an independent press review also reaches without the same clarification. It lands inside the roughly 1,250–1,800 g band that most road-legal full-face helmets in our range occupy — a middling number, not a headline one.

Visor and Pinlock

Every visor detail on the Skwal i3 traces back to the VZ400 family it shares with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup: Optical Class 1 rating, a pre-fitted Pinlock 70 with adjustable tension, a moulded vortex generator, a lens that varies from 3 mm to 2.2 mm through its thickness, an anti-scratch coating, and tool-free removal via a central grip with central locking. IRID photochromic tinting is reserved for three other Shark models — the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro — and doesn't extend to this one.

Sun visor and everyday usability

Small conveniences add up over daily use: the crown-slider sun visor that drops without stopping, the interior reworked so glasses sit comfortably, and a shell that's ready for a Sharktooth or SENA intercom with no modification needed. All of it sits under Shark's 5-year warranty.

What you unpack

The helmet itself, Pinlock 70 already fitted rather than loose, the LED system's USB-C cable stored in the neck protection, and Shark's paperwork covering the 5-year warranty and the light system's own operating instructions.
