Black with red is the more conventional Runway and the most conspicuous version in the Street S range — which on a helmet used almost entirely in traffic is the specification that matters most.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

🔵 One sentence that should not be buried on an inexpensive helmet: the chin and jaw region takes a substantial share of impacts in real crashes, and this helmet has nothing over it.

That is the fact that should decide whether an open-face suits your riding — not the price.

About the Runway B5 graphic

Red is a high-saturation colour that holds up well against the greys and blacks of a road environment, which puts it ahead of everything here except the white for being seen. On a scooter helmet ridden in city traffic that is a functional argument rather than a styling one, and it costs 4 € over the plain versions. Against a black ground the red also stays contained enough that the helmet does not become the loudest thing you are wearing, which suits a helmet worn with ordinary clothes rather than riding gear. 🔵 The known weakness is ultraviolet: red pigment fades faster than most, and a helmet left on a scooter in summer sun will lose depth. A printed graphic also cannot be touched in after a scuff the way a solid colour can. Of the five finishes here it is the one we would choose for a scooter ridden in city traffic every day, simply because it is the most visible option that is not white. White is better still for conspicuity, but it shows city road film within a week, and on a helmet whose interior cannot be removed for washing, keeping the outside presentable is the only cosmetic control you have. This is the compromise between the two.

The cheapest helmet MT makes — and what that means

An honest summary: this is a current-standard, dual-homologated open-face helmet with the equipment stripped back to keep the price at 47 €.

🔵 It is genuinely good value. It is not a well-equipped helmet, and the list of what is missing is longer than the list of what is included.

What this helmet does not have

🔵 No intercom provision is listed either. You can fit a universal system to almost any helmet, but without designed-in speaker recesses the speakers sit against the padding — which on a helmet with a non-removable liner is harder to work around than usual.

If you rely on navigation audio, this is not the helmet for it.

HIRP, 1025 grams, ECE 22.06 and DOT

The structure is conventional and appropriate: an injection-moulded HIRP shell to spread the load and resist penetration, over a polystyrene liner that absorbs energy by permanently crushing.

🔵 A crushed liner does not recover. After a real impact the helmet is finished, whatever it looks like from outside.

The long MT-V-15B visor

Fogging on an open-face is a different problem from fogging on a full-face. Your breath escapes downwards into open air rather than being trapped behind a chin bar, so the visor stays clear in conditions that would mist a full-face.

🔵 That matters here, because MT lists no anti-fog provision for the Street S at all.

The MT-Micrometric+ closure

Practise fastening it once with the gloves you actually ride in. A micrometric ratchet is the easiest closure to operate in gloves, but the strap length has to be set correctly first — and that is done bare-handed, once.

🔵 Ratchets drift with use; a strap that has loosened lets the helmet move.

Cleaning a helmet with a fixed liner

Store the helmet somewhere it can dry rather than in a sealed top box, particularly after a wet ride. On a helmet whose liner cannot be removed, drying is the only maintenance available — and it is the difference between a liner that lasts five years and one that does not.

🔵 Direct sunlight is the other thing to avoid; UV degrades both the shell and the visor.

Choosing the right size

🔵 Head circumference gets you to the right size; head shape decides whether it is comfortable. If a helmet presses at the temples but is loose front-to-back, that is a shape problem rather than a size one, and no padding change fixes it — least of all on a helmet with a fixed liner.

Six sizes cover XS to XXL.

Where it sits in MT's range

🔵 MT's range is unusually consistent: almost everything is built on the HIRP platform, with the carbon KRE+ S as the single exception. What changes between models is the body type and the equipment rather than the construction.

The Street S is the most stripped-back helmet in that range, and the lightest.

When something wears out

Genuine parts matter more on a helmet than on most things, because the visor and the retention system are part of what was certified to ECE 22.06 and DOT. A pattern visor with different optical properties is not the helmet that was approved.
