DescriptionThe whole story▼

Being seen is the whole point of the Skwal i3's engineering: integrated LED brake lights front and rear, activated by the helmet's own accelerometer, independent of the motorcycle's wiring — a world first for a production helmet, per Shark. Ready Matte carries that in a matte black shell with a white and grey graphic instead of the gloss line's colour.

How the brake light actually works

Three flashes a second is the helmet telling the car behind you that you're slowing down; five flashes a second is it telling them you're slowing down hard. Both come from a three-axis accelerometer built into the shell, reading deceleration directly rather than any signal borrowed from the motorcycle, and both are on the rear-facing red LEDs — the front-facing white LEDs run separately, adding visibility that has nothing to do with braking.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

The honest version of a weight spec includes which size it's for, and Shark's does: 1,570 g for the Skwal i3's first, smallest shell, a number an independent press review also cites without specifying size. Within the roughly 1,250–1,800 g spread of road-legal full-face helmets in our own range, that places the Skwal i3 comfortably in the middle rather than at either extreme.

Visor and Pinlock

Five Shark helmets — the Skwal i3, D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — share one visor family, VZ400, and that means the same Optical Class 1 rating, the same pre-fitted, tension-adjustable Pinlock 70, the same moulded vortex generator, and the same 3 mm-to-2.2 mm variable thickness across all of them. Anti-scratch coating and tool-free central-lock removal are standard too. None of the five appear on Shark's IRID photochromic list, which is limited to the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.

Sun visor and everyday usability

The shell doesn't need drilling, cutting or any other modification to accept a Sharktooth or SENA intercom — it's designed for it. Add a crown-slider internal sun visor and an interior reworked to avoid pressure on glasses arms, and the Skwal i3 has most everyday annoyances covered before you've fitted a single accessory. Warranty: 5 years.

Wind noise, honestly

No decibel figure, because none exists for this helmet in any source we'd trust — instead, an independent long-term review's actual finding: noise levels weren't unduly loud, no single part of the shell generated localised wind noise, and a substantial neck roll plus a generous chin curtain were named as the reason.

Ready Matte at a glance

a matte black shell with a white and grey graphic instead of the gloss line's colour. That's the graphic. The matte finish underneath it is a practical choice as much as an aesthetic one: durable against visible wear, less dramatic under direct light.

A rider who rides mostly in traffic, where following distances are short and reaction time is everything, gets the clearest benefit from this decor's brake light — more so than a rider doing long solo rides on empty roads. That's not a knock against the open-road rider, just an honest account of where the feature actually earns its keep — a fast, quiet A-road with nobody behind you for a mile doesn't need a brake light nearly as much as a roundabout at rush hour does.

Fit across the size run

From XS to XXL, six sizes are available. We haven't been able to confirm how many separate shells this specific model uses, so we're not stating a number — the size chart, checked against your own head measurement, remains the way to get this right.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

Knowing the neighbours helps with any purchase. Shark's road ladder: Ridill 2 (€189.99+), D-Skwal 3 (€219.99+), Skwal Cup (€269.99–€339.99, no LED), this decor (€349.99), Skwal i Cup (€329.99+, the only other LED model).

Spare parts, later

A cracked or heavily scratched visor is annoying on any helmet; on the Skwal i3 it's at least simple to fix, since the VZ400 lens and Pinlock 70 insert are shared parts also used on the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup.

What this helmet does not have

Read this section before the rest, if you only read one: no SHARP star rating exists for the Skwal i3 (the older Skwal and Skwal 2 were tested separately and those stars don't carry over), ECE 22.06 without an FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic option, and a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring. Most importantly: whether the integrated brake light may be used on German public roads is genuinely unresolved. Shark's manual tells riders to check their own country's legislation rather than claiming the light is approved, gives no E-mark for it, and no source — Shark's or independent press — states a confirmed answer.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

The Skwal i3's light system is designed to be topped up, not swapped out: a sealed internal battery, filled via USB-C in about three hours for roughly twelve hours of flashing-light use, with the cable stored in the neck protection. It sleeps automatically after 60 seconds without movement and shuts down after 72 hours of inactivity. According to the manual, a nearly empty battery will still power the system on, only to shut off again almost instantly — recharging is the only way back.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

A helmet tested bare, at one speed, dropped straight down five times — that's roughly what ECE 22.05 asked for. 22.06, which every Skwal i3 carries, asks for eighteen impact points, several speeds, an oblique-impact hit against an abrasive anvil, a Brain Injury Criterion for rotational forces, and the helmet worn complete with visor, Pinlock and comms unit. It's been mandatory in the EU since January 2024, and the Skwal i3's own certificate carries no FIM suffix: 2206 alone, road approval rather than competition homologation.

Shell, closure and ventilation

A ratcheting micrometric buckle replaces the double-D ring here, clicking shut at a precise tension and adjusting in seconds even with gloves on — a small but real difference from some other Shark road helmets. The shell it's attached to is injection-moulded Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner, and the ventilation is multichannel: front intakes to rear extractors, four and two respectively by independent count.

In the box

Ready to wear out of the box: Pinlock 70 fitted, USB-C charging cable for the brake light already stowed in the neck protection, and the manufacturer's documentation covering the 5-year warranty and the LED system.
