DescriptionThe whole story▼

Johann Zarco has won the Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race twice, and this decor marks that relationship with Japan rather than repeating his French GP livery: a white base carries graphic elements drawn from Japanese calligraphy, including a combined "Z" and "5" referencing 2026 as the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac — Zarco's own zodiac sign, born in 1990 — alongside the Japanese flag and carbon-fibre-pattern detailing. It's a matte finish, and a genuinely different story from the GP de France decor in the same range.

Managing turbulence, not just looking fast

Air moving smoothly over a helmet's shell stays attached to the surface; past a certain speed, on a plain rounded shell, it detaches at the back and rolls into turbulence — and turbulence is what a rider feels as buffeting. The Skwal Cup's rear spoiler, shaped through computational fluid-dynamics work and confirmed in a wind tunnel, is built to keep that airflow attached for longer, delaying separation rather than styling around it. It's the same physics Shark's track helmets are shaped to manage, brought down to a road-legal shell.

The Suzuka finish, in use

White reads clean against the black and the calligraphy-inspired graphics, and the matte surface keeps that base from turning into a glare panel in direct sun. It forgives everyday scuffs more readily than gloss white typically does, at the cost of slightly more effort to keep fully clean — the usual matte trade, worn here by a livery that rewards a closer look.

Since January 2024, in the EU

Every newly homologated helmet sold in the EU has had to meet ECE 22.06 since January 2024, and the Skwal Cup is certified to it. What changed from the older 22.05 standard is substantial: five impact points became eighteen, one impact speed became several, a straight drop test gained an oblique-impact companion against an abrasive anvil, and a rotational Brain Injury Criterion joined the older linear-deceleration score. The rig also tests the helmet fitted with its visor, Pinlock insert and a comms unit, not stripped down. This model's paperwork reads 2206, with no FIM suffix attached.

Shell, EPS and closure

Polycarbonate, in two shell sizes rather than one-size-fits-all. The EPS liner inside is multi-density, firmer where impact energy needs managing most, softer where comfort matters more. The chinstrap closes with a double-D ring rather than a buckle.

A helmet's weight is a neck-load figure

Strip away the marketing framing and a helmet's weight spec is really a neck-load figure: the mass the rider's neck supports, statically, for however long the ride lasts. Shark's number for the Skwal Cup is 1,580 g (+/-50 g), quoted for the smallest of its two shell sizes — S and M sit close to that, L through XXL, on the larger shell, will typically run a bit more for the same helmet. Most of the road-legal full-face lids in our own range fall between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g; this one is closer to the centre of that band than to either edge.

Ventilation, briefly

Front intake, twin rear exhausts. No adjustable vent count claimed here beyond that — just the layout as built.

Built for daily use

A drop-down internal sun visor, operated by a crown slider, sits alongside a shell ready for intercom fitment, a quick-release outer visor, and cheek pad cut-outs sized for glasses.

Sealing the gaps, not chasing a number

A perimeter seal around the visor and a chin curtain at the shell's base are what this helmet uses to cut air leaks — the actual source of most wind noise. No decibel rating exists for it, and we're not inventing one.

Real numbers, not estimates

The Ridill 2 starts Shark's road line-up, the D-Skwal 3 follows, and this decor of the Skwal Cup sits above both. Above that sit the Skwal i3 and the Skwal i Cup — both add an LED brake-light system, which is the main difference the extra spend buys over this helmet.

Ordering a replacement visor

The Skwal Cup shares a spare-visor listing with the Ridill 2, D-Skwal 3 and Skwal i3 in Shark's own parts catalogue — a scratched, pitted or fogged visor after a season of commuting is a straightforward reorder rather than a reason to shop for a new lid.

The comparison worth making before you buy

If an LED brake light matters to you, this isn't the helmet — the Skwal i3 and Skwal i Cup carry that system, the Skwal Cup doesn't. If a SHARP star rating matters, note that SHARP has never tested the Skwal Cup, only the Skwal, Skwal 2 and D-Skwal. Homologation here is ECE 22.06 only, with no FIM suffix, and there's no MIPS liner, no electronic quick-release system, and no tear-off posts on the visor.

In the box

The Skwal Cup itself, Pinlock 70 fitted to the visor, and paperwork for the five-year warranty period.

What the Suzuka 8 Hours is

The Suzuka 8 Hours is one of endurance motorcycle racing's best-known fixtures, run at Japan's Suzuka circuit and traditionally treated by Japanese manufacturers as a season highlight in its own right, separate from world championship racing. A rider with two wins there has a result that carries weight specifically in Japan, which is why this decor's Japanese-calligraphy graphics and flag detailing make sense as a tribute rather than a random design choice — it's tied to where the result actually mattered most.

Shark offers Zarco's colours on the Skwal Cup in two distinct decors — this Suzuka design and the separate GP de France 2026 replica — and they're not interchangeable liveries with different names: one references a French home round, the other a Japanese endurance win, and the graphics reflect that rather than reusing the same template with different colours.

A buyer choosing between the two is really choosing between two different stories, not two colour options on one design.
