DescriptionThe whole story▼
Please note: sale to France is prohibited.
Matt light silver is the closest thing on this shelf to an unpainted helmet. It reads as raw material rather than as a colour choice — bare alloy, brushed steel, the inside of an old fairing — which is an unusually good match for a helmet designed to look like equipment rather than styling.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
The J•O2's face opening is the reason to own it and the reason to think carefully about it. It is what gives you peripheral vision no full-face can match, airflow no ventilation system can imitate, and the ability to wear whatever glasses you already own.
🔵 It is also an absence of material where a chin bar would be. ECE 22.06's open-face category has no requirement covering that region, because there is nothing there to certify.
About the matt light silver finish
Silver is doing something different from grey here. A grey helmet is a colour; a light silver in matt is a suggestion of metal, and on a smooth unvented dome that suggestion holds up surprisingly well. It also solves a problem the matt black has: silver is a genuinely bright value, so you keep the flat, low-key surface without giving away the conspicuity that matters most in town. In summer it is the coolest-running shell of the thirteen alongside the Off White, because a pale surface reflects rather than absorbs, and on an open-face that compounds with the airflow you already have. It hides dust better than matt black and worse than a mid-tone. Like every matt finish it is washed rather than polished — there is no clear coat to buff a mark out of.
AIM, four shells and a double-D ring
The argument for a double-D ring over a micro-ratchet is not romance. A ratchet is quicker and can be worked in gloves, which is why touring helmets use it; a double-D has no mechanism, no plastic teeth and no adjustment that can drift, which is why race regulations require it.
On a helmet you take on and off several times a day the ratchet's convenience is real — but on this one you get consistency instead, over an AIM composite shell and a multi-density polystyrene core.
The CJ-4 visor — and the Pinlock that does not exist for it
Three drop positions is more useful than it sounds. Fully down for weather and motorway air; one notch for a summer evening where you want the visor there but the air moving; fully up for town, for a fuel stop, for anywhere you want your face uncovered. The detents hold firmly enough that airflow does not move them.
🔵 The visor is not Pinlock-ready — no anti-fog insert is manufactured for the CJ-4.
Press studs, peaks and goggles
The goggle loop at the rear of the shell is imitation leather and quietly one of the best details on the helmet. It holds a classic goggle strap in place so it cannot ride up over the crown, which is the failure mode of wearing goggles over any helmet not designed for them.
Combined with a peak on the forehead studs, it produces the configuration this helmet was clearly drawn for.
Ventilation without a single vent
The absence of visible vents has a second benefit beyond appearance: there is nothing to break, nothing to jam with grit, and nothing that rattles at speed. Vent sliders are among the most commonly damaged parts on any helmet, and the J•O2 simply does not have them.
The airflow is integrated into the shell instead, and the face opening does the heavy lifting.
Interior, trim and getting the fit right
Shoei's PFS (Personal Fitting System) is worth knowing about before you buy. A trained dealer can add or change padding elements to shim the interior to the shape of your head — useful because heads are not round, and a size label describes circumference rather than form.
The base interior is fully removable and washable, with cheek and centre pads available in several thicknesses.
Around 1150 grams, and the rest of the honest list
Noise deserves a straight answer. An open-face is louder than any full-face, and there is no engineering fix for it — the turbulence reaches your ears directly. Earplugs are not an accessory on this helmet, they are part of the equipment.
🔵 Communication provision is the other absence: no speaker recesses, no cabling routes, no dedicated system.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
🔵 If you are cross-shopping this against a full-face, understand what the money is not buying. The J•O2 is not less protective than the Glamster06 because it is cheaper — it is less protective because it has no chin bar. Price and coverage are separate questions here.
Within the open-face category it is a genuinely premium helmet: AIM shell, four shell sizes, double-D retention.

When something wears out
Interior padding is the part worth planning to replace. It compresses with use, absorbs sweat and eventually stops holding the helmet where it should be — and a new set of pads restores a three-year-old helmet more completely than most people expect.
Cheek and centre pads are available in several thicknesses; the chin strap covers are separate parts too.
