DescriptionThe whole story

Matt black is the practice helmet in the range, and that is a compliment rather than a criticism. Nothing about it is precious, and the flat surface takes goggle-strap marks and paddock handling without recording every one of them.

A motocross helmet — goggles, not a visor

🔵 Goggles are not supplied. They are not an accessory on this helmet, they are the eye protection — there is no face shield and no way to fit one.

Choose them with the helmet's aperture in mind, and try the pair you actually ride in rather than a borrowed set; goggle frames differ enough that it is worth checking.

About the matt black finish

Off-road helmets live harder lives than road ones, and the finish that copes best with that is a flat one. There is no clear coat for a scuff to catch in, so the low-level marking a helmet picks up between the van and the start gate simply does not read — and an MX helmet picks up a great deal of it. Dry dust is the exception, because matt holds it more visibly than gloss, but dust washes off and swirl marks do not. The finish also suits the shape: the Falcon S's shell is defined by its peak line and its goggle aperture, and matt shows those as geometry rather than as reflections. 🔵 Two things to weigh. It is the warmest-running version in the range in summer sun, and it is the hardest for anyone to pick out at distance — which on a trail ridden in a group is worth thinking about. For a helmet used mostly on a closed circuit that matters less; for green lanes and enduro it matters a great deal, and the Ruler C2 with its fluorescent panels is the better choice there.

ECE 22.06 — and the DOT the older Falcon had

🔵 Reviews and listings for „the MT Falcon" may describe the previous generation, which held ECE 22.05 and DOT. The Falcon S is a different helmet on the current standard.

Full ECE 22.06 approval means the current schedule: more impact points, higher test speeds, and a rotational-impact assessment the older 22.05 did not include.

HIRP and 1350 grams

🔵 What a thermoplastic shell means in practice: it is injection-moulded rather than laid up by hand, which makes it cheaper to produce and heavier than a composite of equal strength. Competition off-road helmets use composites for exactly that reason.

At 102 € the Falcon S is an entry helmet, and HIRP at 1350 g is a fair result for the money.

The adjustable peak

🔵 The peak does real work on a track: it deflects roost thrown up by the rider in front, shades the eyes at low sun, and keeps rain off the goggles at slow speed. None of that is decorative.

On tarmac it becomes an aerofoil, which is one of the reasons this helmet is unpleasant above about 80 km/h.

Intakes, extractors and why an MX helmet runs cool

🔵 Airflow only happens if there is somewhere for the air to go, which is why the rear extractors matter as much as the front intakes. An MX helmet with intakes and no extraction is a helmet full of warm air.

The Falcon S has both, and the open goggle aperture adds more again.

The double D-ring

🔵 If you have not used a double D-ring before, practise it once at home rather than for the first time at a start gate. Thread, pull, tuck the loose end away. Ten seconds, identical tension every time.

A strap that is even slightly loose lets the helmet move, and on an MX helmet with a peak acting on it, that matters.

What this helmet does not have

🔵 No intercom provision is worth stating plainly, because riders coming from a road helmet often assume it. An MX shell has no speaker recesses and no cable routing, and the open aperture makes any system audible only at low speed.

If group communication matters to you, MT's Track SV or District SV S are the off-road-capable helmets that support it.

Choosing the right size

🔵 Try the helmet on with the goggles you actually ride in. The aperture is wide, but goggle frames differ enough that a pair which fits one helmet can sit badly in another — and a goggle that does not seal is worse than none.

Five sizes cover XS to XL.

Where it sits in MT's range

🔵 Against MT's Track SV at 136 €, the comparison is straightforward: the Track SV has a visor, a sun shield and a SHARP 4-star rating, and it is usable on a motorway. The Falcon S is lighter, far better ventilated, and unusable at road speed.

They are different tools rather than different price points.

When something wears out

🔵 The peak is designed to break away rather than resist load, so treat it as a consumable rather than a failure when it does. A replacement costs a fraction of a helmet.

Interior padding is the other part that wears, and on an off-road helmet it takes dust as well as sweat.

  • Ventilation — multiple front intakes and rear extractors — high airflow, with no adjustment
  • Retentiondouble D-ring — nothing for grit to jam, identical tension every time

“The full off-road kit for 102 €, and the airflow is genuinely good. What it does not have is any documented rotational-impact system — the heaviest-weighted axis in this category — and parts of the Falcon range carry only ECE 22.05.”
