DescriptionThe whole story

Dexter is the second graphic family and B15 carries it in gloss red and grey — the most conventionally sporting version in a range that otherwise leans towards touring.

A chin guard that opens — and the P/J question

🔵 If riding with the chin bar raised matters to you — in traffic, at low speed, on a hot day — check the approval label inside the helmet for a P/J marking before relying on it. MT's published specification for the Atom 2 SV does not mention one.

Closed, the helmet is homologated to ECE 22.06 and approved to DOT.

About the Dexter B15 graphic

Red against a grey ground is the pairing that survives dirt best among the brighter options here: insect strike and road film read as a haze on pale grounds and largely disappear on mid ones, so this version still looks presentable after a week of distance. Red is also a high-saturation colour that holds up well against grey tarmac, which puts it among the more conspicuous choices without going fluorescent. 🔵 Red pigment fades faster than most under sustained ultraviolet, and gloss shows swirls if dry-wiped.

HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT

Weight matters most at the end of a long day and least in the first ten minutes, which is why it is the specification most often underweighted when buying a touring helmet.

🔵 At around 1.7 kg the Atom 2 SV is a genuine all-day helmet rather than a light one. The format is responsible for much of it.

MT-ESP — a sun visor that meets the nose deflector

🔵 Keep the sun shield as clean as the main visor. It is the surface closest to your eyes, easy to forget because it lives inside the shell, and a fingerprint on it is far more visible than one outside.

Clean it wet, never dry.

MT-FSOS, MT-ESLS and the Pinlock in the box

🔵 A note on tinted visors and the law. Fixed dark visors are not road-legal at night or in poor visibility in most European countries. On this helmet the question largely disappears — the extended MT-ESP shield drops behind a clear visor and retracts instantly.

The main visor is the MT-V-35, supplied clear with a Pinlock lens fitted.

The double-hook closure

🔵 Two things to get right before your first long ride: the strap length, set bare-handed at home, and the fit itself. Neither can be corrected on the road, and the closure only solves the first.

The Atom 2 SV uses MT-Micrometric+ with a double-hook MT-MDTC engagement.

A spoiler that hides the exhaust

🔵 If you ride in genuine heat, treat ventilation as the open question on this helmet. The layout is documented — concealed exhaust, visor ventilation position — but MT publishes no figures and nobody has independently measured it.

We would rather say that than describe a performance we cannot verify.

Interior, fit and the chin curtain

🔵 Replacement cheek pads are the most useful spare part on any helmet and the least often bought. They correct a fit that has loosened with wear and solve a hot spot that would otherwise mean a different helmet entirely.

Genuine MT pads for the Atom 2 SV are available, as are complete linings.

Intercom preparation

🔵 If navigation prompts are your reason for wanting an intercom, the sun visor matters alongside it: a bright morning otherwise means squinting at a screen at every junction.

The Atom 2 SV has the extended MT-ESP shield and is prepared for a communicator.

Where it sits in MT's range

🔵 Against a fixed full-face at the same money, the question is whether you will actually use the chin guard. Riders who open it at every stop find modulars indispensable; riders who do not are carrying 200 g of hinge for nothing.

Be honest about which you are before choosing.

When something wears out

The serviceable parts list on this helmet is longer than a fixed full-face's: visor, Pinlock lens, sun shield, lining, cheek pads and the chin curtain.

🔵 Between them they cover everything except the shell, the EPS liner and the chin-guard mechanism.

Specification

  • Model — MT-Helmets Atom 2 SV
  • Part number — 1335C95B15103
  • Colour — Dexter B15 — Gloss, red and grey
  • HomologationECE 22.06 and DOT; MT states the helmet exceeds both
  • 🔴 P/J dual homologationnot documented by MT. P/J is what makes riding with the chin guard raised legal in most of Europe — check the approval label on the helmet before relying on it
  • 🔴 Safety rating — none — SHARP has never listed the Atom 2 SV, and modular helmets are rarely tested by the programme. No ADAC or Snell result, and no independent road test has been published
  • Helmet type — Modular / flip-up, all-round touring
  • ShellHIRP (High Impact Resistant Polymer), with a rear spoiler concealing the ventilation exhaust
  • Weight — approx. 1.7 kg — typical for a thermoplastic flip-up; the format carries 150–250 g over a fixed full-face
  • Sizes — XS to XXL (six sizes)
  • Chin guard — single-button release, operable one-handed
  • VisorMT-V-35 with MT-FSOS fast opening including an automatic anti-fog position, and MT-ESLS release with a dedicated ventilation position
  • Anti-fogPinlock® DKS512 included as standard; FogOff FOG013 is a compatible alternative
  • Sun visorMT-ESP retractable shield with extended coverage that aligns with the nose deflector
  • RetentionMT-Micrometric+ with a double-hook MT-MDTC engagement against accidental opening
  • Interior — fully removable and washable
  • Also supplied — chin curtain
  • Communication — intercom-ready — no system supplied
  • Impact liner — expanded polystyrene — crushes once and does not recover; replace the helmet after any real impact
  • Serviceability — visor, Pinlock lens, sun shield, lining, cheek pads and chin curtain all available separately
  • Flip-up maintenance — check the chin-guard pivot and its seals annually — dust and water are what seize a modular mechanism
  • Manufacturer — MT-Helmets (MT Helmets, Spain)
  • Replacement guidance — after around five years of use regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
  • Compared with the Thunder 4 R SV — that fixed full-face is around 200 g lighter and cannot open at a stop. Both use HIRP shells; only the Atom 2 SV adds DOT approval alongside ECE 22.06
  • Sizing note — measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and try the size the chart gives you. A helmet that can be rolled forward off your head with the strap fastened is too large — and on a 1.7 kg modular a poor fit shows itself sooner than on a lighter helmet
  • Care — wash the lining by hand a few times a season; never wipe the visor or the sun shield dry, as road dust scratches both permanently

“The modular mechanism works without snags and the padding holds up over distance. Against it: 1,700 g, no independent test result, and conflicting reports on how quiet it really is at speed.”
