DescriptionThe whole story▼
Carbon Skin is the cheapest way into the carbon Spartan RS, and it earns that position honestly: the visible carbon weave itself is the graphic, sealed under a glossy clear coat with no printed pattern laid over it. It ships with an extra visor in the box (per Shark's own product naming, 'Visor In The Box'), a genuine cost saving for a rider who wants a tinted spare from day one rather than buying one separately later. This is the entry point, not a stripped-down version — the shell, certification and closure below are identical to every other decor in this carbon line.
The gloss finish over bare carbon
A glossy clear coat sits directly over the exposed carbon-fibre weave, which is what makes the weave pattern itself readable as a texture rather than hidden under paint. Gloss also means the weave's directional sheen shifts visibly as the helmet catches light from different angles — a small but real difference from how a painted graphic behaves under the same light.
About the Carbon Skin name and the extra visor
Carbon Skin is Shark's name for showing the shell material itself rather than covering it with a printed decor — the plainest, and therefore the least expensive, option in this carbon-shelled line. The 'Visor In The Box' naming on both Carbon Skin decors in this range (this glossy one and the matte HE8160DMA) confirms an extra visor ships in the box, documented directly on the product page rather than inferred.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
Carbon Skin carries ECE 22.06, the EU's mandatory standard for newly homologated helmets since January 2024. The step up from the older 22.05 is substantial: eighteen impact points instead of five, several test speeds instead of one, a new oblique-impact test against a rough anvil that twists the shell rather than just compressing it, and a first-time score for rotational forces via a Brain Injury Criterion. The whole assembled helmet is tested, visor and Pinlock fitted, not a bare shell — the Norme code on this article reads 2206, a road certificate with no FIM suffix.
What the carbon shell changes, and what it doesn't
This shell is carbon, the pricier of the two materials Shark builds the Spartan RS from, and the honest way to describe the gap to the fibre version sold alongside it is by what stays the same: identical ECE 22.06 certification, identical Double-D closure, identical multi-density EPS, identical VZ300 visor family. What carbon buys is a lighter first-shell-size figure — Shark's own number is 1455 g against 1500 g for the fibre shell — and a different surface texture under the coat, not a higher safety rating or a different homologation.
Weight as neck load, not a spec-sheet line
Shark states 1455 g for Carbon Skin at the first, smallest shell size; an independent carbon-specific test unit weighed a touch more, 1485 g, and its reviewer called the saving over the fibre shell 'not game-changing'. Either figure sits on the neck continuously through every brake, lean and head-check across a ride rather than being carried passively — which is the more useful way to think about it than the gram count alone.
Ventilation
Independent testing of the carbon shell scored ventilation 3.0 out of 5: the chin vent works well specifically when leaning forward but struggles in genuinely hot weather, while the top vent is described as adequate. No exact intake or exhaust count is published separately for the carbon shell, and none is invented here — the figure that exists is the score itself, not a component count.
Sun visor and outer visor
A drop-down sun visor is standard and independent testers praise its incremental positioning and 'a perfect seal' against rain on the outer visor. The outer VZ300 visor is optical class 1, tapering from 2.8 mm to 2.2 mm, four-point anchored, centrally locked, anti-scratch coated, with a clear Pinlock 120 insert pre-fitted — the same visor family as the Spartan RS Fibre and the Spartan GT Pro Carbon.
What ships in the box
Beyond the extra visor implied by the 'Visor In The Box' naming, independent testing of this carbon range confirms a helmet bag and reflective bands as standard inclusions, alongside the pre-fitted Pinlock 120 insert. The outer visor detaches without tools, and a removable chin flap ('bavette amovible', per Shark's own French-language product copy) can be taken off for a cleaner look or more airflow.
Intercom compatibility
The shell carries a cheek-pad recess for Shark's own Sharktooth intercom or a SENA For SHARK unit, sitting flush rather than bolted externally — the same mounting compatibility used across the fibre Spartan RS and shared with this carbon line. No comms unit is included; the compatibility is built in, the hardware is bought separately.
Fit and sizing
Six sizes, XS to XXL, are built across two shell sizes, the same split used on the fibre Spartan RS. Independent testing of the carbon interior specifically praises a 'brushed suede-effect Alveotech' lining that 'feels luxurious', a tight neck roll for wind isolation, and a glasses-friendly design — a genuinely upgraded interior feel over the fibre shell's faux-leather trim, even where the mechanical spec is otherwise identical.
Wind noise, honestly
Shark publishes no decibel figure for this helmet. Independent testing of the carbon shell scored noise 4.0 out of 5, describing 'slight buffeting sound' at motorway speeds and good ambient awareness in town, with intercom integration working well — a qualitative and a numeric-but-unofficial score, not a lab-measured dB reading, and reported here as given rather than dressed up as one.
Spare parts
Shark keeps a dedicated visor listing covering the Spartan RS family, both shells, so a scratched or fogged visor here is a replacement part rather than a reason to retire the helmet. The VZ300 visor fitted to Carbon Skin is shared with the Spartan RS Fibre and the Spartan GT Pro Carbon, spreading stock and tint choice across three current lines.
Where this sits in Shark's own range
Set against Shark's own current 2027 lineup rather than a competitor's:
| Line | Shell |
|---|---|
| Spartan RS Fibre | Multiaxial composite fibre |
| OXO | Thermoplastic modular |
| Spartan RS Carbon | Carbon, VZ300 visor shared with Fibre |
| Spartan GT Pro | Thermoplastic |
| Spartan GT Pro Carbon | Carbon, also shares the VZ300 visor |
Limitations, honestly
Carbon Skin shows the weave itself rather than a printed decor, which some riders will read as understated to the point of plain compared with the graphic options later in this line — a deliberate trade for the lowest price in the carbon range, not an oversight. Independent testing also flags a real limitation for the whole carbon Spartan RS: ventilation scored only 3.0 out of 5, struggling specifically in hot weather, and one early test unit needed a customer-service fix for a Pinlock fitting issue. The gloss finish over bare weave also shows swirl marks from improper cleaning more readily than a painted surface.
