DescriptionThe whole story

The grey Highlands is the most neutral graphic in the range and the one that will look current longest, because there is no palette to date. On a helmet likely to outlast a motorcycle, that matters.

A chin guard that opens — and the P/J question

The convenience is genuine and it is why touring riders keep coming back to the format: glasses on and off without removing the helmet, a conversation at a fuel stop, a passport handed over at a border, air on your face in slow traffic.

🔵 MT states ECE 22.06 and DOT approval. It does not state P/J, which is the certification that permits riding with the chin bar raised.

About the Highlands C2 graphic

Tonal and near-tonal graphics age far better than coloured ones because colours belong to seasons and values do not. A grey treatment reads as design rather than as a marker of when the helmet was bought. Grey is also the most practical value on a touring helmet — insect strike, road film and dried rain all show least against a mid tone, which on a two-week trip is the difference between a helmet that looks used and one that looks neglected. 🔵 Conspicuity is mid-range: better than the matt black, well short of the neon E2.

HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT

🔵 No independent safety rating exists for this helmet. SHARP has never listed the Atom 2 SV, and modular helmets are rarely tested by the programme at all. There is no ADAC or Snell result either.

What it holds is ECE 22.06 and DOT certification — pass marks rather than comparative ratings.

MT-ESP — a sun visor that meets the nose deflector

If you wear prescription glasses, a retractable shield is far more practical than prescription sunglasses or a tinted visor — it goes up and down without removing anything, which on a flip-up you are opening at every stop anyway.

🔵 The Atom 2 SV's is the extended MT-ESP type.

MT-FSOS, MT-ESLS and the Pinlock in the box

Fogging is decided at low speed — junctions, traffic, waiting — where there is no airflow to clear a visor. This helmet attacks it twice: with the supplied Pinlock DKS512 lens, and with the MT-FSOS automatic anti-fog visor position.

🔵 On a flip-up you also have a third option: open the chin guard. Whether that is legal on the move depends on a P/J marking MT does not document.

The double-hook closure

🔵 A loose strap is the most common way a helmet fails to do its job, and on a flip-up it compounds: a helmet that can rotate is also a helmet whose chin guard is not where it should be.

The MT-Micrometric+ double-hook closure adjusts finely enough to get it right. Check it periodically.

A spoiler that hides the exhaust

🔵 In stationary traffic no helmet ventilates well — airflow needs airflow. On a modular you have the option a fixed full-face does not: open the chin guard. Whether that is legal on the move depends on a P/J marking MT does not document for this helmet.

Stationary, it is simply the most effective thing you can do.

Interior, fit and the chin curtain

The parts that wear on any helmet are the ones you touch: the lining compresses, the cheek pads absorb sweat, and the chin-strap area frays. All of it comes out on this helmet, and all of it washes.

🔵 Replacement padding is also the right answer to a helmet that has loosened with use.

Intercom preparation

The combination that makes a modular helmet genuinely useful for touring is the chin guard, the sun visor and the intercom — open at a stop, shaded on the move, connected throughout.

🔵 The Atom 2 SV provides the first two and is prepared for the third.

Where it sits in MT's range

🔵 If an independent safety rating is part of your decision, note that only MT's Track SV currently carries one — four SHARP stars. No MT modular has been tested, and modular helmets are rarely tested by SHARP at all.

Every current MT holds ECE 22.06; this one adds DOT.

When something wears out

🔵 A word on visor care, because it prevents most of the visor sales we make. Never wipe a dry visor — road dust is abrasive and dragging it across the surface leaves permanent fine scratches that flare against oncoming headlights at night.

Wet it first, every time. The MT-ESLS release makes replacing one straightforward.

Specification

  • Model — MT-Helmets Atom 2 SV
  • Part number — 1335C94C2103
  • Colour — Highlands C2 — Gloss grey
  • HomologationECE 22.06 and DOT; MT states the helmet exceeds both
  • 🔴 P/J dual homologationnot documented by MT. P/J is what makes riding with the chin guard raised legal in most of Europe — check the approval label on the helmet before relying on it
  • 🔴 Safety rating — none — SHARP has never listed the Atom 2 SV, and modular helmets are rarely tested by the programme. No ADAC or Snell result, and no independent road test has been published
  • Helmet type — Modular / flip-up, all-round touring
  • ShellHIRP (High Impact Resistant Polymer), with a rear spoiler concealing the ventilation exhaust
  • Weight — approx. 1.7 kg — typical for a thermoplastic flip-up; the format carries 150–250 g over a fixed full-face
  • Sizes — XS to XXL (six sizes)
  • Chin guard — single-button release, operable one-handed
  • VisorMT-V-35 with MT-FSOS fast opening including an automatic anti-fog position, and MT-ESLS release with a dedicated ventilation position
  • Anti-fogPinlock® DKS512 included as standard; FogOff FOG013 is a compatible alternative
  • Sun visorMT-ESP retractable shield with extended coverage that aligns with the nose deflector
  • RetentionMT-Micrometric+ with a double-hook MT-MDTC engagement against accidental opening
  • Interior — fully removable and washable
  • Also supplied — chin curtain
  • Communication — intercom-ready — no system supplied
  • Impact liner — expanded polystyrene — crushes once and does not recover; replace the helmet after any real impact
  • Serviceability — visor, Pinlock lens, sun shield, lining, cheek pads and chin curtain all available separately
  • Flip-up maintenance — check the chin-guard pivot and its seals annually — dust and water are what seize a modular mechanism
  • Manufacturer — MT-Helmets (MT Helmets, Spain)
  • Replacement guidance — after around five years of use regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
  • Compared with the Thunder 4 R SV — that fixed full-face is around 200 g lighter and cannot open at a stop. Both use HIRP shells; only the Atom 2 SV adds DOT approval alongside ECE 22.06
  • Sizing note — measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and try the size the chart gives you. A helmet that can be rolled forward off your head with the strap fastened is too large — and on a 1.7 kg modular a poor fit shows itself sooner than on a lighter helmet
  • Care — wash the lining by hand a few times a season; never wipe the visor or the sun shield dry, as road dust scratches both permanently

“The modular mechanism works without snags and the padding holds up over distance. Against it: 1,700 g, no independent test result, and conflicting reports on how quiet it really is at speed.”
