LS2 FF820 Rapid III Helmet – Hyper Black/Hi-Vis Yellow

Fluorescent yellow exists because human eyes find it before anything else on the road. On the Hyper panels it covers enough area to register in a mirror rather than reading as a stripe.

1350 grams, and why that is the headline

The scales say 1350 g (±50), taken on a mid-size shell with nothing added to it. Weight is the specification riders under-rate at the counter and over-rate after a long day — a helmet is a mass on the end of a lever, and the lever is your neck. Wind load at motorway speed compounds it.

Placed against the rest of our LS2 range, the FF805 Thunder is the only lighter option, at a considerably higher price.

The range spans XXS to 3XL across 3 shells. That split is what keeps proportion sane — a small size sits close to the head instead of ballooning, and a large one is not wrapped around a shell that was never sized for it.

About the Hyper Black/Hi-Vis Yellow finish

This is the most conspicuous helmet in the Rapid III range, and the matt coat helps rather than hinders: it scatters light evenly instead of throwing one hot highlight, which keeps the fluorescent area readable from wider angles and in flat winter light. Fluorescent pigments fade faster than ordinary paint under UV, so this is the one decor genuinely worth keeping out of a sunny window. If you commute in traffic, no other finish here does as much work.

Air in at the chin and the crown

Ventilation runs front-to-back through the shell rather than just over it. Air enters at chin and crown, travels through channels cut into the EPS liner, and leaves through the rear extractors — a pressure difference the helmet creates for itself as you ride.

Seeing out

The visor is scratch-resistant, UV-stable and cut wide, sealed against the shell by a double-injection gasket — two materials moulded together so the soft sealing lip is part of the visor rather than glued to it. The quick-release mechanism swaps it without tools.

This screen takes a Pinlock 70 MaxVision anti-fog insert, the wide version that reaches the edges of the aperture instead of leaving a visible frame in your vision. To be plain about it: the insert is not in the box. Part DKS521.

What the ECE 22.06 plaque actually means

ECE 22.06 is not a relabelled 22.05. The old standard hit five marked points on the shell and recorded straight-line deceleration. The current one hits up to eighteen, at multiple speeds, and adds an oblique impact against a slanted, sandpaper-faced anvil — a test designed to measure rotation rather than compression.

Rotation is the injury mechanism European regulation ignored for decades: a glancing blow that twists the head does more damage to the brain than the same energy delivered straight on. 22.06 puts a hard ceiling on it. The visor and any fitted accessory go through the process too, which is why a drop-down sun visor cannot simply be added after approval.

Holding on

Ratchet buckle, reinforced webbing, metal certification plaque. Worth saying out loud: a correctly tightened strap does more for you than any shell material. A helmet that comes off during a crash protects nobody.

The bit you actually touch

The liner is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, breathable, and lifts out completely for washing. LS2 call it their maximum-comfort interior; in practice that means more crown padding than an entry-level helmet usually carries. A chin curtain is fitted as standard.

On noise

Wind noise is the specification manufacturers never quote, because it depends more on your bike than on their helmet. What the helmet controls is the seal at the neck roll, the gap under the chin bar and the vents. A chin curtain is fitted as standard, and it is the single most effective piece of quiet in the box — provided it stays in the helmet after you clean it. The Rapid III is a compact, plainly shaped shell with no sun-visor housing bulking out the sides, which helps — but it is a 99-euro helmet and it does not pretend to be a quiet one.

What it does not control is the airflow leaving your screen. If a helmet is loud on one motorcycle and quiet on another, the screen is usually the reason. Plugs cost a euro and do more than any shell shape.

What it is, and what it is not

Be clear about what this is. The Rapid III has no internal sun visor, so a tinted or iridium screen is how you deal with a low sun, and the Pinlock insert is a separate purchase. Everything else is above what the price suggests.

When something wears out

Worth knowing before you buy rather than after: everything on this helmet that wears out can be replaced individually. Liners in all eight sizes seven replacement visors from clear to iridium, the ratchet closure, chin curtain, chin strap cover, nose guard and all three vent covers.
