DescriptionThe whole story▼

Plain white is the classic adventure helmet colour for a reason: it stays cooler in the sun and stands out against tarmac and forest alike. Leatt's ADV 8.5 White pairs that with a complete travel kit. Inside the box you find a photochromic visor fitted at the factory, a clear visor, a Pinlock anti-fog insert of the 120 XLT MaxVision type plus the Velocity 4.5 goggle from Leatt. The helmet is approved to ECE 22.06 and to the US DOT standard and is offered in sizes S to XXL in this colourway.

Safety first: what is inside the shell

Protection here starts with a fibreglass composite outer shell laid up in three layers and continues with 360° Turbine Technology, Leatt's in-house system for managing rotational and linear impact energy. The turbines are small flexible discs placed in the liner; Leatt's own data claims up to 30 % less peak brain acceleration and up to 40 % less rotational acceleration. That is manufacturer testing, not an independent result, and we show it as such. A double-D ring secures the strap. Emergency cheek pad release tabs let first responders remove the pads before easing the helmet off an injured rider.

About the White finish

This is the cleanest ADV 8.5 colourway: solid gloss white across the whole shell and peak, with the Leatt logo in black above the visor and on the chin, black trim around the eye port and a black chin vent grille. There are no graphics to date it, so it pairs with any jacket and any bike colour. White reflects heat, which helps on hot stages and when the helmet sits on the mirror in the sun. It also makes the rider easier to see in fog and at dusk. The downside is honest: dust, insects and chain lube show quickly, and stone chips stand out. Gloss white cleans easily with water and a mild soap, and a dedicated helmet cleaner removes bug stains without dulling the clear coat.

Choosing a size

The White version is listed from S, for 55 to 56 cm, up to XXL, which fits 63 to 64 cm; the XS size for 53 to 54 cm heads is offered only in the two other colourways. Leatt makes the ADV 8.5 on three shell sizes. With five sizes in this colourway, some neighbouring sizes share an outer shell and are separated by padding thickness. That keeps the helmet compact for most heads but gives a slightly roomier shell at the small end of each pair. Run a tape around the forehead about a finger's width over the eyebrows and order by the centimetre value. New padding beds in over the first riding days, so a helmet should feel firm on the cheeks at first rather than merely comfortable. Leatt publishes no head shape for this model, and we will not guess one.

Goggle port and the Velocity 4.5

The eye port is extra wide so a full off-road goggle sits flush with the face opening rather than being squeezed by it. The kit includes the Leatt Velocity 4.5 goggle; the tint of its lens in this kit is not specified by Leatt. To ride with goggles only, unclip the visor without tools and fit the supplied covers over the visor mechanism. With the peak removed and the visor in place, the helmet changes character for motorway sections. Leatt counts four configurations in total, which is why the ADV 8.5 can follow you from a tarmac day to a rally-style loop.

Photochromic visor and Pinlock

The factory visor adjusts its tint to the light level, so there is less reason to carry a separate dark visor. A clear visor is supplied for night riding or for days when you want no tint at all. The anti-fog insert in the carton is the 120 XLT MaxVision, the largest Pinlock format, covering almost the full visor aperture so the view stays clear in rain and cold air. It sits between two small adjustable pins on the inside of the visor; if mist creeps in at the edge, turning the pins slightly increases the pressure on the silicone seal.

Ventilation in practice

ADV Pulse found three intakes that can be closed and seven exhausts. Their verdict: the flow is modest but gets the job done, and the brow slider takes some force. AMCN, testing in Australian conditions, rated the venting excellent. Expect good airflow at speed and less when crawling through rocks with the visor shut; that is when the goggle mode earns its place. With the visor removed and the goggle on, air enters directly through the face opening, which is the setup most enduro riders choose in summer heat.

On noise

We publish no decibel figure because nobody has measured one in a comparable test. AMCN found the helmet pleasantly quiet, even visor-up, and ADV Pulse described it as quiet inside. The seal formed at the neck by the chin skirt and the cheek padding, together with the wind-tunnel-developed shell, explains that result. Rider height, screen shape and the angle of the peak in the airflow still change what reaches your ears, so earplugs remain sensible on long motorway days.

Neck load and weight

At 1,575 g the ADV 8.5 is mid-weight for a peaked adventure helmet. The 9.5 saves around 85 g through its carbon shell. On a long day those grams are carried with every turn of the head, and a peak adds wind load at speed. Riders who mainly travel on the road will rarely notice; riders who spend hours standing on the pegs will notice more. Removing the peak for road stretches lowers the wind load more than any weight saving would.

ECE 22.06 in plain words

The current European standard, mandatory for new helmets since January 2024, tests at up to eighteen points rather than five, uses several impact speeds and adds an oblique impact against an abrasive anvil to capture rotation. Visors and accessories supplied with the helmet are tested fitted. DOT approval is added for the US market.

ADV helmet or motocross helmet?

Leatt also builds the Moto 8.5, a pure off-road helmet with a similar composite approach. It is lighter, at around 1,305 g in size M, uses a four-density EPS liner and a breakaway peak, and ships with a Velocity 5.5 goggle. What it lacks is a visor: on the road you ride behind goggles only. The ADV 8.5 makes the opposite choice. It accepts extra weight in exchange for a visor, a Pinlock lens and a calmer interior at speed, which is what a travel helmet needs when the trail is only part of the day.

Known limits

No integrated sun visor is listed by Leatt. The peak is fixed in angle, noted by ADV Pulse. XS is not available in White. Leatt also does not name the lens tint of the supplied goggle.
