DescriptionThe whole story▼

The matte version of Shiever swaps the red accents of its gloss sibling for silver, and swaps the gloss shell for a flat matte finish — a cooler, more subdued reading of the same panel layout.

Not a disposable helmet

Because Shark lists dedicated spare visors covering the D-Skwal 3, Skwal Cup, Ridill 2 and Skwal i3, a damaged or outdated visor is a parts order, not a reason to retire the whole helmet.

The Shiever matte finish, in use

Matte shells resist showing fine scuffs under direct light better than gloss ones, at the cost of showing fingerprints and grime more readily and needing a little more care when cleaning to avoid dulling the finish further. The silver accent lines read cooler against the matte black and anthracite than the gloss sibling's red does.

This matte Shiever also lists at EUR 269.99, level with its gloss sibling. Picking gloss red over matte silver, or the reverse, is a finish decision rather than a protection or certification one; both draw on the identical shell, closure and visor covered earlier.

Everyday conveniences, listed plainly

Internal drop-down sun visor for low-sun riding, Sharktooth and SENA intercom compatibility without shell modification, and a main visor that keeps its tool-free quick release for cleaning — none of these headline a spec sheet, but all of them get used on an actual daily ride.

Construction, plainly stated

Thermoplastic shell, two shell sizes across the six-size run, multi-density EPS underneath it, and a micrometric buckle to close it. None of that is exotic engineering, and it is not meant to be — it is a straightforward, road-proven construction built to be reliable rather than to impress on a spec sheet.

A simple, glove-friendly vent layout

Two intakes at the chin, two exhausts at the crown — four vents total, each one built to be opened and closed with a gloved hand rather than requiring the rider to stop and use bare fingers. A long-distance review found the arrangement adequate in normal use, less so at 30 degrees without cracking the visor.

What the two-shell split delivers

Six sizes, XS to XXL, spread across two shell sizes, keep the shell-to-head ratio from drifting too far in either direction across the range. A removable, washable liner and glasses-compatible cheek pads handle the day-to-day fit details once the shell size is right.

Accessible, not stripped down

219.99 EUR opens the D-Skwal 3 range and this decor sits above that floor, but the aerodynamic and certification work behind it does not change by price step. Every D-Skwal 3, plain or graphic, gets the same CFD-developed shell, the same wind-tunnel check, and the same ECE 22.06 approval described below — the decor changes the look, not the engineering underneath it.

A whistle above 25 mph, visor cracked

That is what an independent 1,700-mile test found when the visor was opened for airflow at speed — a whistle loud enough to be picked up on camera audio. The same review called the helmet pretty loud generally without earplugs. No decibel figure is quoted here because none has been reliably measured.

A price comparison, not a vague claim

Instead of calling this helmet good value in the abstract, here is the actual price ladder around it:

EUR 269.99 is this decor's own list price.

Helmet line List price
Ridill 2 from EUR 189.99
Skwal Cup from EUR 269.99
D-Skwal 3 from EUR 219.99
Skwal i3 from EUR 319.99

All prices are Shark's own current 2027 list prices. This comparison is deliberately limited to price; nothing here is claimed about how the Ridill 2, Skwal Cup or Skwal i3 are specified underneath.

A harder test than the number suggests

22.06 sounds like a minor update on 22.05; it tests like a different standard. Impact points rise from five to eighteen, speeds multiply rather than staying fixed, an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil is added specifically to load the shell with rotation and grazing force, and a Brain Injury Criterion captures that rotational energy for the first time. Shark tests this helmet complete with visor, Pinlock and comms unit fitted. EU law has required 22.06 for newly homologated helmets since January 2024, and the certificate here carries no FIM suffix.

No hidden gaps

MIPS: not fitted. EQRS: not fitted. Tear-off posts: not fitted. IRID photochromic visor: not offered on this line (limited to the AERON GP, AERON and RACE R PRO). Certification: ECE 22.06 only, no FIM suffix. A SHARP rating exists for a helmet called 'Shark D-Skwal', but that is the 2018 original tested to the older 22.05 standard — a different helmet from this D-Skwal 3, which carries no SHARP score.

What VZ400 actually means

VZ400 is Shark's designation for the visor family fitted to the D-Skwal 3, Skwal i3, Skwal i Cup, Skwal Cup and Ridill 2 alike: Optical class 1, a built-in vortex generator, thickness varying from 3 mm to 2.2 mm, a factory-fitted Pinlock 70 with adjustable tension, anti-scratch treatment and a tool-free central lock.

A closer look at Shiever, in matte and silver

Swapping the gloss shell for matte and the red accents for silver changes the character of the same panel layout considerably: where the gloss/red pairing reads warm and assertive, this matte/silver combination reads cooler and more industrial, closer to brushed metal than motorsport red. The anthracite panelling still follows the shell's own sculpted lines back toward the spoiler fins, so the underlying design language is shared with the gloss Shiever even though the finished result looks quite different side by side. This is the pairing for a rider who likes the Shiever layout but wants a quieter, less attention-seeking version of it for daily wear.

Silver accent lines against a matte base tend to show scuffing less obviously than a gloss red equivalent would, simply because the surrounding matte surface itself already hides fine marks better under direct light. As with its gloss sibling, sizing runs the standard D-Skwal 3 XS-XXL chart with no graphic-related adjustment needed.

Silver as an accent colour tends to pair more neutrally with riding gear than red does, which may suit a rider who swaps jackets often and wants the helmet to work with more of them by default. Within the Shiever pair, this matte/silver combination is the quieter of the two for a rider who still wants the anthracite panel detailing but prefers to avoid red as an accent.

Why weight is a neck question, not a wrist question

Picking a helmet up off a shelf tells you almost nothing about how it feels three hours into a ride, held up continuously by neck muscles rather than lifted and set down. Shark's 1,540 g figure applies to the smaller of the two D-Skwal 3 shells (larger sizes on the bigger shell will run a little heavier), and it lands within the roughly 1,250-1,800 g range typical of road-legal full-face helmets.

Keeping decor HE0911KAS out of direct sunlight when not in use helps a matte finish keep its look for longer. The Pinlock 70 insert fitted to decor HE0911KAS is the same VZ400-family part described earlier, shared across five current Shark road helmets. Decor HE0911KAS carries the same 2206 homologation code as the rest of the D-Skwal 3 range, with no FIM suffix.
