DescriptionThe whole story

Plain White is the other 199-euro version and the more rational of the two for a helmet ridden in heat. A pale shell reflects the solar load a dark one converts straight into interior temperature.

Peak, aperture and the adventure compromise

The peak is the most engineered part of this helmet. Beyond shading the eyes and deflecting sun, dust, rain and stones, it carries an anti-vibration system aimed at the single worst characteristic of peaked helmets: lift and buffeting above about 100 km/h.

🔵 It removes without tools for a cleaner, road-focused profile — and the helmet is noticeably quieter that way.

About the white finish

The thermal argument matters on an adventure helmet because so much of the riding happens at speeds too low for airflow to help — picking a line through gravel, waiting at a border, crawling through a village. In those conditions the shell's own absorption dominates, and white is measurably cooler than black. It is also the easiest version here for another road user to resolve at head height in flat light, which on unfamiliar roads is worth something. 🔵 The cost is dirt, and this helmet gets genuinely dirty rather than merely dusty. It cleans up completely; it will not stay clean on a trip.

Polyfusion, two shells and four approvals

🔵 What thermoplastic means in practice: the shell is injection-moulded rather than laid up by hand, which makes it cheaper to produce and heavier than a composite of equal strength. It also makes it very consistent, because the process is machine-controlled.

That is the whole reason this helmet costs 200–240 € where Nexx's composite adventure helmets cost two to three times as much.

The visor, the wide eye port and the second shield

🔵 Optical class 1 is the higher of the two grades under ECE 22-06 and means the visor introduces essentially no distortion. On an aperture this wide it matters more than usual, because you are looking through the outer edges of it far more than on a road helmet.

The coating is anti-scratch, and a Pinlock 70 MaxVision lens is supplied.

The sun visor and its glove-friendly button

🔵 A glove-friendly external control is worth more than the shield itself. An internal visor operated by a small recessed slider is one you will not deploy at 100 km/h in gloves; one on a button on the shell you will.

The shield blocks 99 % of ultraviolet.

Two intakes, four exhausts — and a zero-degree measurement

🔵 The number worth quoting: a 0 °C difference between the inside of the helmet and the ambient air, measured on the road. That is the best possible outcome — the shell is not building heat — and it earned a 4/5 ventilation score.

Two intakes and four exhausts is a modest specification producing a good result.

How loud it actually is

🔵 A peak is an aerofoil and a wide aperture is an opening; both make noise. No adventure helmet escapes that. What the Y.TRAVL offers against it is a peak with an anti-vibration system and a peak that removes in seconds.

Measured: around 102 dB, scored 3/5 — standard for the category.

Interior, retention and fit

🔵 Comfort is this helmet's weakest independent score, at 3 out of 5, and the reason given was the liner: functional rather than luxurious. On a helmet at this price that is a fair trade rather than a fault, but it is worth knowing before a two-week trip.

The fit itself was found true to size, for an intermediate-to-long oval head shape.

Around 1.8 kilograms, and the rest of the honest list

🔵 This is a heavy helmet and there is no way to present it otherwise: 1805 g measured against a 1750 g ±50 claim. A thermoplastic shell needs more material than a composite to reach the same strength, and a peak adds more again.

If weight is your priority, a composite adventure helmet is 100–250 g lighter and costs two to three times as much.

What is in the box, comms and spare parts

🔵 „Integrated" here means cable channels, a battery recess and a microphone position built into the shell rather than a unit clamped to the edge. On a helmet that goes off-road, that is the difference between a system that stays put and one knocked off by a branch.

X-COM3 comes in Standard and PRO forms, the PRO adding 2.0 Mesh and Harman Kardon sound.

“The peak comes off and the kit is all there, but at 1,805 g this is not a helmet for a long day on the pegs. As a road-biased dual-sport lid at this price it makes more sense.”
