DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Nolan X-804 RS Ultra Carbon D.O.C. Matte Black Finish 359 is a statement of Italian racing heritage rendered in raw, unadorned carbon fibre. Where most performance helmets choose between looks and function, this matte black D.O.C. finish lets the natural weave speak for itself — a deliberate design choice that signals intent before the visor even drops. Decades of Nolan race-programme development have shaped every surface, every vent and every gram of this shell, producing a helmet that is as visually compelling as it is technically uncompromising.
Key Features
- Ultra-Carbon shell with a matte D.O.C. finish that exposes the natural carbon weave — a design identity as distinctive as any livery
- ECE 22.06 certified, meeting the most current European safety homologation standard for both road and track use
- Four outer shell sizes and six EPS liner densities ensure a precise, low-profile fit across the full XXS–XXXL size range
- Ultrawide, flat visor with a 97° vertical and 225° horizontal field of view, Safety Visor Lock System (SVLS) rated for speeds above 250 km/h
- Racing Air Flow (RAF) ventilation system, wind-tunnel developed, with chin intake, crown vents and rear exhaust channels
- Racetrack Aerodynamic Spoiler (RAS) engineered using CFD simulation — removable, and optimised to reduce lift and turbulence at top speed
Design, Finish and Heritage
Nolan has been producing helmets in Italy since 1972, and the X-804 RS represents the pinnacle of that lineage. The D.O.C. finish — short for Design Original Carbon — strips away any painted topcoat to present the carbon fabric in its natural matte state. The result is a surface that is simultaneously technical and elegant: the interlocking weave visible beneath a clear protective lacquer, giving each helmet a subtly unique character. Matte black reinforces the stealth aesthetic, absorbing light rather than reflecting it, and pairing equally well with aggressive track machinery and refined road bikes.
This finish is not simply decorative. Retaining the carbon surface without a heavy paint layer marginally reduces finished weight, contributing to the helmet's target figure of 1420 g ±50 g — exceptional for a full-face race-sport design at this specification level.
Shell Construction and Safety
The Ultra-Carbon shell is a high-modulus carbon fibre construction, selected for its strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to deformation under impact. Four distinct outer shell sizes — rather than stretching a single mould across the full size range — mean that every helmet size achieves the ideal balance of protection volume and reduced external bulk. Six corresponding EPS liner densities fine-tune energy absorption to each shell size.
Safety systems embedded in the structure include the Nolan Emergency Release System (NERS), which allows emergency services to remove the helmet without aggravating a potential neck injury, and a double-D ring retention system — the closure preferred by race regulations worldwide for its reliability and security.
Ventilation: Racing Air Flow System
The RAF ventilation architecture was developed in the wind tunnel alongside Nolan's race programme. A chin-level intake with anti-fog functionality feeds conditioned air directly towards the face, while dedicated front and crown vents direct flow across the skull. Side and rear exhaust channels draw warm, humid air out at the back. An open-mesh inner liner promotes consistent airflow throughout the interior, keeping concentration sharp during extended high-speed sessions. The system performs at its best precisely when it is needed most — in heavy traffic or at circuit pace in warm conditions.
Visor Technology
The ultrawide, flat visor provides a 97° vertical and 225° horizontal field of view — figures that matter in fast corners where peripheral awareness is the difference between a clean lap and a missed apex. The visor is scratch-resistant, and the Safety Visor Lock System (SVLS) keeps it sealed at speeds above 250 km/h. A Pinlock anti-fog insert is included as standard, adjustable from outside the helmet without removing the visor. A darkly tinted visor — rated for track use — ships alongside the clear unit, and the visor assembly is prepared for tear-off strips. The quick-release mechanism allows a stable, fast adjustment suited to the demands of competitive riding.
Interior Comfort and Fit
Inside, the X-804 RS employs the LAF (Liner Adjustable Fitting) system, which offers multiple padding thickness options for a personalised, millimetre-precise fit that remains consistent across long sessions on road or track. The LPC (Liner Position Control) system adds vertical adjustment of the inner liner height, accommodating a wide range of head shapes without compromise.
The 3D Steady Fit cheek pads are both interchangeable and washable, distributing pressure evenly without hot spots. The EA (Eyewear Adaptive) cut in the cheek pad and lower liner makes this helmet genuinely practical for spectacle wearers, a rarity at race-specification level. The Sakura premium fabric — Italian-sourced — is soft, quick-drying and abrasion-resistant, while an inner carbon-fibre weave layer assists with temperature regulation and moisture management. A CamelBak hydration system port is prepared in the liner for endurance riding.
Aerodynamics: Racetrack Aerodynamic Spoiler (RAS)
The RAS spoiler was shaped using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, targeting a reduction in aerodynamic drag and rear-end lift at high speed. The optimised tail profile improves neck clearance in a racing tuck position, and reduced turbulence behind the helmet translates directly into less fatigue during extended high-speed riding. The spoiler is removable, giving the rider the option to configure the helmet for pure road use or full track specification.
Fitment and Compatibility
The Nolan X-804 RS Ultra Carbon D.O.C. Matte Black Finish 359 is a universal full-face helmet approved for road use under ECE 22.06. It is not compatible with the Nolan N-Com Bluetooth communication system. It is suitable for spectacle wearers.
