DescriptionThe whole story▼

Kaiju II is one of two character-led graphics in this range, and it is the more aggressive of them — red and white worked over a black base into something deliberately monstrous.

1350 grams, and why that is the headline

🔵 A light helmet is also a quieter one to wear over distance, in an indirect way: less mass means less buffeting when your head is pushed around by turbulence, and less correction from your neck to keep it steady.

1350 g ±50 g, mid-size shell.

HPTT shell, three shell sizes and ECE 22.06

🔵 The oblique impact test added in 22.06 is the most consequential change in three decades of European helmet approval. Rotation is behind a large share of serious head injuries, and 22.05 had no test for it at all.

The Rapid III is homologated to the current standard.

No independent safety rating — and the trap that goes with it

🔵 The absence of a rating is worth weighing rather than dismissing. It means nobody independent has measured this helmet's impact performance — so the only evidence available is that it meets ECE 22.06, which is the legal minimum.

For many riders at this price that is a reasonable basis. It should be a decision rather than an assumption.

About the Kaiju II graphic

Illustrative graphics are a different proposition from abstract ones and should be judged differently. An abstract pattern of shards and sweeps is safe: it offends nobody, it dates slowly, and it is more or less forgettable. A graphic with a subject is a commitment — you either want to wear it or you do not, and you will know within a second. What makes this one wearable rather than costume is the restraint of the palette: red and white on black is a conventional motorcycling combination, so from more than a few metres the helmet reads as a red and black lid and only resolves into artwork close up. 🔵 Practically it behaves like a dark helmet in poor light, offset a little by the white elements. Printed artwork of this complexity cannot be touched in after damage — a deep scratch is permanent in a way it would not be on a solid colour. Between the two illustrated graphics, Kaiju II is the more composed: it has a centre, it is broadly symmetrical, and it reads as a designed object rather than a scene. Zombie II is the looser of the pair. If you are choosing between them, look at photographs of both from the side as well as the front — that is where the difference between them is largest.

What this helmet does not have: an internal sun visor

🔵 No internal sun visor, and no photochromic visor offered for this model either. Glare management on the Rapid III means either sunglasses or a second visor you swap by hand.

Replacement visors in tints are available separately.

Chin and top intakes, channelled EPS

In summer the crown intake does the work; in winter you close everything and rely on the chin curtain and an anti-fog insert.

🔵 The insert is not supplied — the visor is prepared for a Pinlock 70 MaxVision, sold separately.

Anti-fog — prepared for, not supplied

🔵 Fogging is what stops most riders in November, and it is entirely solvable. The Rapid III supplies two thirds of the solution — a chin intake feeding the visor, and a breath deflector — and leaves the last third to you.

Buy the Pinlock 70 MaxVision at the same time as the helmet.

Lining, closure and everyday comfort

🔵 Replacement cheek pads in other thicknesses are the most useful spare LS2 sells and the least often bought. A helmet that has loosened over two seasons is usually fixed with thicker pads rather than replaced.

The complete lining is available separately too.

Where it sits in LS2's range

🔵 The Rapid III replaced the FF353 Rapid and is a different helmet on a different standard — ECE 22.06 rather than 22.05, a different shell, and no inherited test result.

Reviews and ratings of the older model do not describe this one.

Care and replacement parts

🔵 A visor is a consumable. Once it is scratched enough to flare at night, replace it rather than living with it — the cost is small and the difference in night vision is not.

Clear replacements and the Pinlock 70 MaxVision insert are both available.

In the box

  • LS2 FF820 Rapid III helmet — Kaiju II, Black, red and white (HPTT shell)
  • Clear outer visor, fitted
  • Chin curtain, fitted and removable
  • Breath deflector, fitted and removable
  • 🔵 No internal sun visor — this model does not have one
  • 🔵 No Pinlock insert — the visor is prepared for a Pinlock® 70 MaxVision™, which is sold separately
  • 🔵 No second visor and no intercom — both are separate purchases

Size guide

🔵 Sizes at the extremes benefit most from three shells. A 3XL built on a shell sized for it is proportioned correctly; one built on an XL shell with thin padding is neither comfortable nor properly protective.

This helmet splits 2XS–S, M–L and XL–3XL.

Size Head circumference
2XS 51–52 cm
XS 53–54 cm
S 55–56 cm
M 57–58 cm
L 59–60 cm
XL 61–62 cm
2XL 63–64 cm
3XL 65–66 cm

Specification

  • Model — LS2 FF820 Rapid III
  • Part number — 168200632
  • Colour — Kaiju II — Black, red and white
  • Homologation — ECE 22.06
  • 🔴 Safety rating — none. SHARP has no entry for the FF820, Rapid III or Rapid 3 (brand list checked directly). The 2-star result under „FF353 Rapid" belongs to the previous-generation helmet — different shell, different standard — and is deliberately not carried over. No ADAC or Certimoov result either
  • Shell — HPTT injection-moulded thermoplastic; three shell sizes (2XS–S / M–L / XL–3XL)
  • Weight — approx. 1350 g (±50 g), mid-size shell without accessories
  • Sizes — 2XS to 3XL (eight sizes)
  • 🔴 Sun visor — none. This helmet has no drop-down internal shield — unlike LS2's FF808 Stream II, FF811 Vector II and FF817 Challenger II. It is most of the reason it weighs 1350 g
  • Visor — clear outer visor, scratch-resistant, tool-free change
  • 🔴 Anti-fog — prepared for Pinlock® 70 MaxVision™ — the insert is NOT included. The pins are fitted; the lens is a separate purchase
  • Ventilation — chin and top intakes feeding channelled EPS, with rear exhausts — two intake paths, one more than the FF817. 🔵 Assessed from the published construction; no independent airflow measurement exists
  • 🔴 Wind noise — left unrated — no independent measurement is published for this model
  • Retention — ratchet buckle
  • Interior — hypoallergenic, antibacterial, fully removable and washable. 🔵 No branded wicking fabric (no COOLMAX or X-Static) and no magnetic wind deflector — both appear further up LS2's range
  • Included — chin curtain and breath deflector, both fitted and removable
  • 🔴 FIM homologation — none — a road helmet, not eligible for FIM-sanctioned competition
  • Serviceability — visors, cheek pads in several thicknesses, complete lining, chin curtain, breath deflector and vent covers all available separately
  • Replacement guidance — after about five years regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
