On a graded track the two things that decide how hard an air filter is working arrive together. The bike is moving slowly, so there is little airflow to carry anything away and the cloud the front wheel lifts stays with you. The engine is turning fast in a low gear, so it is asking for a large volume of air every minute. Tarmac keeps those variables apart — fast air is usually clean air. Off the road they peak at the same moment and stay there for the length of the section. The Sprint Filter T12 SM245T12 is drawn for that hour, not for the ride out to it.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special non-woven filtering to 7 microns
- Rated at 560 litres per square metre per second, the flow that belongs to a medium this fine
- Never oiled, so no film sits ahead of the throttle bodies or the air sensor
- Takes the standard element's place in the series airbox: nothing cut, nothing remapped
- Cleaned with an air line and refitted, for a life as long as the motorcycle's
- Warranty of two years, running from the purchase date
Why the worst air comes with the highest demand
A road-going engine usually meets its dirtiest air at low load — idling in traffic, crawling past roadworks. The 800DE reverses that. Loose ground is where it works hardest and where the air is worst, and the two do not merely coincide, they cause each other: the throttle openings that keep it moving through soft going are the ones lifting the surface into the air. A medium chosen on the average of a riding year will be at its least suitable precisely when the riding gets serious. That is the argument for specifying by the worst section of a route, not the longest.
The price of seven microns
None of this is free. The P08 weave filters at 80 microns and flows a rated 5,050 litres per square metre per second; P037 is 37 microns and 4,500, P14 is 14 and 1,800, and the T12 is 7 and 560. Every step finer holds back more and passes less — a trade, not a ranking — and 560 is a large share of flow to give up deliberately. If your 800DE mostly links tarmac with the occasional gravel driveway, the P08 is the better balanced part, or the P14 if summer dust is the recurring theme. And whichever medium goes in, it will not make a standard 800DE noticeably stronger — the gain is a lower, steadier restriction across the whole interval, on an element that is cleaned instead of replaced.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the everyday work: hold the line to the clean face of the SM245T12 and push the dust back out the way it came. When a trip has left more than air will move, lukewarm water with a mild detergent lifts it; rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it fully in open air, with no heat gun and no flame near it, and refit it dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Built for the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE of 2023 to 2026, replacing the series element in the unmodified airbox. This extreme-conditions medium is listed for that machine alone, while the standard element of the same platform spans several; the Fitment tab has the detail.
