The airbox shared by KTM's big adventure twins is offered three Sprint Filter media and no more. The standard weave, 80 µm at 5,050 l/m²/sec, covers thirteen machines. The extreme non-woven, 7 µm at 560, covers six. This one, the racing weave at 85 µm and 15,000, covers two — and the 1090 Adventure is one of them. Between 80 microns and 7 there is nothing at all on this housing. The choice is not a scale; it is three widely spaced points.

The gap the 1090 sits in

A large travel twin on mixed surfaces has a use case that lands squarely in the empty middle of this range: something tighter than the standard weave, nowhere near as restrictive as the extreme mat. For this airbox the catalogue does not offer that. Neither the water-repellent medium nor the intermediate non-woven appears against any of these machines, so the honest reading is that the standard element is the default for a 1090 and the two outliers are for particular days. This is the outlier at the free-flowing end.

What the racing weave costs and what it buys

A little over twice the standard element for the same housing. The cloth is coarser rather than finer — 85 microns against 80 — and the rated flow is about three times as high, which is the opposite direction from what most adventure riders are shopping for. That is as clear a statement as there is about who this medium was drawn for: it answers sustained wide-open running, a condition a loaded 1090 on a mountain pass reaches rarely and only in short bursts. It does not add power to a standard machine; nothing fitted inside an unmodified airbox does.

Care and cleaning

PM155S F1-85 is serviced without anything being applied to it. Compressed air on the clean face, blown outward, so the load leaves along the path it came in on; that is the whole of an ordinary clean. A dusty tour that leaves more behind than air will lift comes out with lukewarm water and a mild washing-up detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Then it dries in open air only, for as long as that takes — a heat gun, a radiator or a flame is what destroys polyester, and there is no version of this step that can be hurried. It is refitted dry.
