Few motorcycles collect aftermarket parts as reliably as this generation of Speed Triple. Exhausts, mapping, levers, screens, rearsets, and a great deal of argument about the order they ought to be fitted in. The element in the airbox belongs to none of that. Buying a PM123S is not a step in a tuning sequence and does not depend on where you happen to be in one, because it changes how the intake is maintained rather than how the engine is tuned — and that holds whether the bike is standard or wearing a full system.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester in one layer, 80 µm calibrated aperture, threads from ø 22 microns upwards
- 5,050 l/m²/sec of rated flow, the standard Sprint Filter medium for road and track use
- No oil in the weave, so no film can be drawn on to the sensor or into the throttle bodies
- Close to twice the filtering surface of rival performance elements, in the standard housing
- Straight swap for the series panel, with the airbox and the factory map left alone
- Cleaned instead of replaced, laid out for the life of the bike, two years of warranty
Two decisions that never meet
Tuning work changes what the engine asks for. A filter can only reduce the resistance it adds itself; it does not supply air and cannot hand back more than it takes. That is why a drop-in element will not make a standard 1050 triple noticeably stronger, with an exhaust or without one, and why nobody should order one expecting to feel a difference on the road. What it does is turn a part that gets consumed into a part that gets serviced. Cleaned, its resistance goes back to the value it began with, instead of rising steadily towards the day the next paper panel falls due.
Why the calibration is unaffected
The airbox, its inlet, its volume and the throttle bodies behind it are all untouched. The element sits in the same opening with the same footprint and the same seal, so the intake the engine management was calibrated around is the intake it still sees. No remap, no fuelling work, no question over approval. That is worth stating plainly on a machine that has often had a full system fitted at some point: this is the one intake decision that stands apart from every other one, and it can be made, or undone, without disturbing anything else on the bike.
Care and cleaning
The service is an air line and a few minutes with the tank lifted: blow from the clean face outwards so the dust leaves the way it arrived. Where road film has built up, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will shift it, rinsed until the water runs clear. Drying is done in open air, with no heater and no flame involved, and the element goes back dry. Oil plays no part in any of it. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Speed Triple 1050 of 2011 to 2015. One further listing shares this element, the Speed Triple 1050 R built from 2012, so the part covers both versions of this generation. Later Speed Triples use different elements, so check your year in the Fitment tab.
