The EX650 Ninja earns most of its kilometres in short pieces. It is the bike people commute on, and a commute is a cold start, twenty minutes of traffic and a wet car park at the other end, repeated three hundred times a year. Intake air on that diet is rarely dry and never especially clean. A cellulose element takes up moisture from damp air and gives it back slowly, and every cycle of that leaves it a little less like the part that was fitted. The Sprint Filter P08 PM163S is woven polyester instead: it does not absorb, it can be washed when winter has finished with it, and the restriction the engine pulls against in March is the one it pulled against in October.
Key Features
- Cleaning is compressed air, not a purchase — the element is washable and goes straight back in
- Nothing in it is oiled: dry polyester leaves no film to be drawn onto a sensor or a throttle body
- Polyester thread from ø 22 microns, woven to a calibrated aperture — a fabric, not a sheet pressed from pulp
- Filtering area: roughly double that of other performance filters
- Straight into the standard airbox: no modification, no remap, no change to homologation
- The warranty period is two years and starts on the date of purchase
Short runs are harder work than long ones
A motorcycle that never quite settles into a steady temperature spends its life in the transient part of the map — small throttle openings, changing loads, constant adjustment. That is precisely where intake restriction is felt rather than measured. Nobody notices two percent missing at the top of fourth gear on a commute; everybody notices a bike that answers a small throttle opening a fraction late in traffic. A filter that begins at a low restriction and is returned to it at each service protects the part of the performance this bike actually uses.
Ten model years, one part number
This generation has been in the range since 2017, which means the EX650 Ninja is now a common first big bike and a common second-hand purchase. Both those owners benefit from the same thing: a service item that is bought once. Sprint Filter design the P08 to last the life of the motorcycle, so the airbox stops generating invoices and starts generating a ten-minute job with an air line. The element carries two years of warranty from the date of purchase.
Care and cleaning
Servicing it is dry work. Compressed air from the clean side, directed outwards, is the whole routine. Once a winter has been and gone, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Leave it in open air until it is completely dry — never with heat, never with a flame — and refit it dry. Nothing is oiled at any stage. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Kawasaki EX650 Ninja, 2017 to 2026. The same PM163S element serves five machines built around this airbox, across the Ninja, Z650, Versys and Vulcan families; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
