LS2 FF906 Advant Solid Matt Black – Flip-Up Touring Helmet ECE 22.06 P/J

Matt black is the default for a reason, and the reason is not fashion — it is that a matt black helmet is the only one that never clashes with anything and never dates. What it does to this particular helmet is worth a sentence: with no highlights running along the shell, the Advant loses the visual seam between chin bar and upper shell, and a flip-up that reads as a single piece is a rarer thing than it should be.

Where this helmet sits, and what the Advant X costs extra

What does the extra money buy further up this range? Shell material and the weight that follows — not features. Sun visor, Pinlock, emergency release, metal buckle, 180° chin bar and dual P/J appear on every flip-up row below.

That makes the Advant easy to judge. Want the mechanism and equipment at the lowest price? This row. Want it 150 or 200 grams lighter? That is what the Advant X rows cost. Nobody is short-changed on equipment at 299 euros — only asked to carry a little more.

The chin bar that goes all the way round

Press the central release under the chin, lift, and the bar swings up and keeps rotating backwards until it lies against the rear of the shell — 180 degrees, not the ninety or so a conventional flip-up manages. It stays there without being held. Two things follow: nothing stands proud in the airstream to drum, and the helmet becomes one you can genuinely ride open at moderate speed — exactly what the second homologation certifies.

About the matt black finish

Matt black absorbs light rather than bouncing it, and that single property drives everything else about living with it. Scratches effectively vanish — there is no gloss layer for them to catch in — which makes it the most forgiving of the three on a helmet that spends its life being put down on tank bags, café tables and pillion seats. It is also the least conspicuous, and that cuts both ways: understated on the bike, and genuinely harder for a driver to pick out at dusk than the white version on this same page. If you ride in poor light that is a real consideration, and it is the argument for the reflective stickers in the box. Two honest notes: matt black shows dust and dried water spots more than any other finish, and in summer sun a black shell runs hotter than a white one.

KPA, and two shells for seven sizes

Kinetic Polymer Alloy — KPA — is the polycarbonate-based blend this shell is injection-moulded from. Two properties matter: it resists penetration, because a polymer that yields locally beats a stiff composite that cracks; and it is dimensionally repeatable, so every shell out of the tool is identical. The cost is mass, and we do not dress that up. Those shells come in two sizes covering XS through 3XL (XS–L / XL–3XL); each extra shell would mean a second complete set of pivot and locking geometry, which is why almost no flip-up at this price offers more than two.

P and J: two approvals in one helmet

Two letters on the strap, two homologations in one helmet. P covers it as a full-face: bar locked, chin-region impacts tested. J covers it open, with the bar rotated away. ECE 22.06 treats these as different helmets and tests them separately. A flip-up approved only as P is certified in one configuration, which makes riding it open legally ambiguous across much of Europe. With P/J that ambiguity disappears.

1750 grams on a flip-up

1750 grams (±50). Weight is the specification ignored in a shop and remembered on a long day, so it belongs near the top of this page rather than the bottom. Think of it as load, not a number: your neck is not holding a helmet up, it stabilises a mass on a lever every time the road moves — roughly five per cent more mass than a mid-range full-face, applied continuously. Fine on a commute, a real factor on a 600-kilometre day.

What the ECE 22.06 plaque actually means

Most shops leave this as a line in a table. ECE 22.06 tests up to eighteen impact points where 22.05 tested five, uses more than one impact speed, and — the substantive change — measures rotational acceleration through an oblique drop onto an angled abrasive anvil, against the Brain Injury Criterion. Straight-line impact was always the easier problem; rotation is what a real crash delivers, at energies a shell survives comfortably. Everything fitted to the helmet is tested as fitted.

Two screens, the Pinlock in the box, and where the air goes

Three pieces of glass, effectively, all included. The main visor is hardcoated, UV-stable and quick-release. The internal sun visor drops on a side slider and retracts fully out of the way. The third usually costs extra elsewhere: a Pinlock® 120 MaxVision™ XLT anti-fog insert, part DKS471, in the box — a second lens sealing against the visor with a thin layer of trapped air, which is why it does not fog when a bare visor does.

Two intakes, one exhaust, channels between them. Air comes in at the chin — the vent that clears a misted visor — and at the crown, into ducts cut in the multi-density EPS. The breath deflector steers your breath down and away. Underneath, the comfort liner is laser-cut rather than stamped, hypoallergenic, breathable, removable and washable.

Getting the helmet off a fallen rider

Beneath the comfort features sit two pieces of hardware that only matter on the worst day. First the emergency release: tabs that let the cheek pads be pulled out sideways at the roadside, so the helmet slides off an unconscious rider without the shell being rotated over the jaw and the neck with it. Second, a reinforced chin strap closed by a micrometric metal buckle — set the length once and the ratchet returns to that tension every ride.

On noise, and what this helmet does not do

What this helmet does not do, plainly. It does not save weight — 1750 grams, the highest figure in our LS2 range, the direct consequence of a polymer shell carrying a rotating chin bar. It does not carry a SHARP rating, because SHARP has not tested it; the four-star „Advant X“ on their site is a separate composite-shell helmet and those stars stay where they belong. It does not have a milled intercom recess — ready for the current LS2 Bluetooth system, but the mount is external.

Noise, finally, without a fabricated number. No laboratory has published a decibel figure for the FF906 and we will not invent one. Air enters under the chin bar and at the neck roll, and a bar lying behind your head cannot drum as an upright one does. A lid loud on one bike and quiet on another is aerodynamics upstream of it.

When something wears out

The parts that wear are the parts you touch, and all are replaceable. The liner is stocked XS to 3XL — a helmet that has started to move on your head after a hot summer usually needs a liner, not replacing. Beyond that: six visors from clear to iridium gold, the chin curtain, chin and crown vents, the complete chin bar, its ratchet, both plates and the Pinlock insert. All in the FF906 Advant Kit.

🔵 Before ordering a sun visor: there are two generations. Up to September 2023 the FF906 used 800906SVI11; from then on 806701SVI11 (tinted) or 806701SVI01 (clear), shared across the MX701, MX707, FF901, FF910 and OF603. They do not fit each other.
