The Scalpel Returns
KTM brought the 790 Duke back after moving production, with revised electronics and the same 799 cc LC8c twin. The nickname the original earned came from how quickly it changes direction, and nothing about the current bike has undone that.
A Hundred and Five Horsepower
From a parallel twin with a 75 degree crank offset, which gives it a firing character close to a V-twin. It is the engine that let KTM compete in the middleweight class without building a V-twin small enough to be affordable.
What the Left Hand Carries
Indicators, horn, beam and the navigation of a colour display with riding modes and traction settings behind it. On a bike this affordable, KTM fitted the electronics of a considerably more expensive machine.
A Cockpit Fully Exposed
No fairing and no screen. Rain reaches the controls at road speed and stays there, and the seam through a clipped moulded assembly is where it eventually causes an intermittent fault that is difficult to trace.
Uneven Firing Through the Bars
The crank offset gives the twin a pulse rather than a hum, which is a large part of its character and is felt through everything bolted to the handlebar. A one-piece machined body handles it better than clipped mouldings do.
Three Anodised Finishes
Black, titanium and orange, all through the surface. Orange picks up the frame and the graphics on KTM's own colour schemes, which makes it a continuation rather than an addition to the cockpit.
Sealed Elements
Contacts sealed inside a body milled from one billet. There is no moulded joint anywhere for water to work into over the years the motorcycle will be kept.
