DescriptionThe whole story▼
The second-generation DL1000 V-Strom carried a 1037 cc V-twin that owners rate far more highly than the sales figures suggest. Three model years is a short run, and the people who bought one tend to keep it and work on it themselves. JP ES 007 handles the secondary air solenoid.
Key Features
- For the Suzuki DL1000 V-STROM, 2017–2019
- Bypasses the PAIR solenoid circuit electronically
- Valve, hoses and reed valves can be removed
- Plug-and-play on the factory connector
- No remapping and no diagnostic reset
- Fully reversible
A V-Twin Makes This Harder
On an inline four the reed valve housings sit in a row along the top of one head. On a 90-degree V-twin there are two heads at right angles to each other, and the rear one is behind the airbox and under the tank. That is the job here, and it is worth an honest estimate before starting.
Where the Noise Comes From
V-twins are already loud on a closed throttle, and owners fitting an aftermarket can often assume the crackle that follows is the pipe. A good share of it is fresh air being pushed into a hot exhaust port, where it ignites fuel the combustion chamber did not finish. Knowing which half is which decides whether removing the system gets you what you wanted.
The Engine Nobody Talks About
Suzuki enlarged this V-twin to 1037 cc for 2014 and gave it traction control and a slipper clutch, and it remains one of the more capable engines in the class. It is also one of the least discussed, which is why work on these bikes tends to be done by owners rather than described in a magazine. Straightforward jobs like this one are worth documenting for that reason alone.
