DescriptionThe whole story

Please note: sale to France is prohibited.

Gloss black is the version in which the Glamster's defining feature does all the work: the visor aperture. It is round, wide and unusually low-set, and against an unbroken black shell it reads as the whole face of the helmet rather than as a window in it.

Five SHARP stars — and which Glamster earned them

Five out of five stars from SHARP, the independent helmet safety programme run by the UK Department for Transport — tested in May 2025, to ECE 22.06, at a measured 1.3 kg. That is the highest score the programme awards.

🔵 Check which entry you are reading. SHARP also lists the previous Glamster, tested August 2021 to the older 22.05 standard, at four stars. The five belongs to the 06.

About the gloss black finish

The Glamster06 is a small helmet and gloss black is the finish that proves it. Three outer shell sizes keep the volume honest across the range, and a reflective surface traces the curvature so the compactness is visible rather than merely claimed — put it next to a modern sport-touring full-face and the difference is obvious. Black also does something specific to the round aperture: with no colour break anywhere on the shell, the eye reads the opening as a single dark shape, which is exactly the effect the helmets this one references had. Upkeep is the standard gloss-black bargain. Road film against dark clear coat is maximum contrast, dry-wiping leaves permanent swirls, and a wash with plenty of water followed by a clean dry cloth keeps it looking new for years.

AIM, three shells, double-D and EQRS

The outer shell is AIM — Advanced Integrated Matrix — a fibreglass composite combining several fibre materials into a deliberately compact, small-looking shell. Beneath it sits a polystyrene core assembled from elements of differing absorption, so impact energy spreads through the structure rather than concentrating at one point.

The chin strap is a double-D ring, and the cheek pads can be pulled out by first responders through the EQRS system for a controlled removal.

The CPB-1V visor — and the sun shield that is not there

The CPB-1V visor keeps the classic round shape that defines the Glamster's face and is entirely modern in function: a wide field of view, a redesigned mechanism that is easy to work in gloves, and a Pinlock® EVO anti-fog lens supplied in the box with spare pins.

🔵 There is no integrated sun visor. That is deliberate — a drop-down shield needs a shell deep enough to house it, which would end the compact silhouette. A tinted or photochromic CPB-1V is the intended route.

One intake, aluminium mesh, no sliders

Ventilation is deliberately understated, because visible vent hardware would break the retro line. A single intake sits at the forehead and works without intermediate steps — open or closed, nothing to fiddle with in gloves.

Two further intakes at the lower chin bar draw air in through aluminium mesh rather than plastic sliders, and the used air leaves through an exhaust at the neck.

Interior, fit and glasses

The interior is fully removable and washable, and the cheek and centre pads are available in different thicknesses — so the fit can be adjusted rather than accepted. MCN's long-term test rated comfort 5 out of 5.

The head shape is intermediate oval, which suits the majority of European heads. If you have a distinctly round or a distinctly long head, try before you buy.

How loud it actually is

Noise is honest here: 4 out of 5 in MCN's long-term test, which is good rather than exceptional. A compact retro shell has less scope for acoustic shaping than a modern touring helmet with a spoiler and a deep chin curtain.

A chin curtain is included in the box and makes a measurable difference. 🔵 On any helmet, earplugs on a long fast ride are worth more than the shell design.

Around 1300 grams, and the rest of the honest list

Around 1300 g makes this the lightest full-face Shoei sells, and the weight is a large part of why the Glamster is popular with a broader range of riders than most sports helmets.

🔵 The honest list of absences: no integrated sun visor, no COMLINK interface, and — confirmed by MCN's long-term test — no intercom compatibility. There are no speaker recesses designed into the padding.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

The Glamster06 is Shoei's classic full-face and sits between the J•O2 jet and the sport-touring GT-Air3. It is the helmet for riders who want the period silhouette without giving up a chin bar — and, unusually, without giving up the safety rating either.

🔵 If you want the same era with an open face, the J•O2 is the jet built on the same design language.

When something wears out

We stock the genuine Shoei parts for this helmet: CPB-1V visors in tinted and photochromic versions, Pinlock EVO DKS056 anti-fog lenses, cheek and centre pads in several thicknesses, chin strap covers and chin curtains.

🔵 The pads are the part worth knowing about — the fit is adjustable rather than fixed if the helmet is nearly right but presses in one spot.

In the box

  • Shoei Glamster06 helmet — Black
  • Clear CPB-1V visor, pre-fitted
  • Pinlock® EVO anti-fog lens with matching spare pins
  • Chin curtain
  • Shoei helmet bag
  • Glamster logo stickers
  • Silicone oil for visor seal and mechanism care
  • Instruction manual and the „Correct use of your helmet" booklet
  • 🔵 No tinted visor — there is no sun shield, so a tinted or photochromic CPB-1V is a separate purchase

“The retro full-face done properly: vintage silhouette, modern homologation, five SHARP stars and a visor seal that keeps it quiet. It loses ground here only to open-face helmets, which fit the café racer brief more literally.”
