The headline number on this element is 15,000 l/m²/sec, and it is worth being clear about what kind of number that is. It is a rate normalised to one square metre of cloth, measured on the material rather than on the part. It is not a quantity of air this filter delivers, and nothing published turns it into one: the panel's surface area appears nowhere in the catalogue. The figure has one honest use, as a ratio — roughly three times the rate of the standard weave for the same housing.
Key Features
- A single dry layer of polyester weave, supplied without oil and kept that way
- Filtration at 85 µm with a rated flow of 15,000 l/m²/sec, Sprint Filter's racing medium
- 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles in the manufacturer's comparison
- Something close to double the filtering surface of other performance media
- Fits the series airbox as it stands — no modification, no adapter, no remapping
- Cleaned and refitted rather than discarded, designed to outlast the service book
Rate, area and what the design answers with
Two elements built from the same cloth flow differently if one of them has more of it, which is why a rate per square metre says nothing on its own about a fitted part. This is where the engineering sits: the pleating puts roughly twice as much filtering cloth inside a frame that must occupy the same space as the paper panel. Read that way the specification describes a material and a construction, and both are honest. What neither describes is a delivery to this engine.
What this machine meets instead
An S 1000 XR earns its keep across distance: long days at cruising speed, screen and cases fitted, throttle openings moderate and steady for hours. That regime is nowhere near the point at which the difference between 15,000 and 5,050 l/m²/sec becomes visible, and no element dropped into a standard airbox makes a series motorcycle noticeably stronger. The gain that survives scrutiny is plain: intake resistance returns to its starting value each time the panel is cleaned, on a machine covering enough ground for the loading to be real.
Care and cleaning
Most services of the PM171S F1-85 need only a compressor: the air goes on to the clean face and blows outwards, so the load leaves along its own entry path. Anything the air line will not release comes off with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water is clear. The drying afterwards is unhurried and passive, in moving air, with nothing warm near it and no flame at any point, before the element is refitted dry. The maintenance sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW S 1000 XR built from 2020 to 2026, in place of the paper panel with nothing altered. The year catches people out, because the earlier S 1000 XR of 2015 to 2019 is a different machine for this purpose and takes PM93S; the same break runs through two other names here, with the S 1000 RR divided at 2019 and the M 1000 RR handing 2025 and 2026 to PM278S. Five machines share this element, listed with their years in the Fitment tab.
