The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

Measured spring rate 12-24 N/mm (progressive)

Inner diameter 46 mm

Öhlins part number 60240-21

Progressively wound

Free length 180 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

Dimensions

Free length 180 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 12-24 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.

Specifications

Brand: Öhlins

Part Number: 60240-21

Spring Rate: 12-24 N/mm

Free Length: 180 mm

Inner Diameter: 46 mm

Construction: Progressive

Country of Origin: Sweden

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0949/7831/0410/files/RearOhlinsSpring_6bb5796e-3e61-4b29-b4ef-0ea21964152d.png?v=1788866925
