Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.

Key Features

Inner diameter 28 mm

Measured spring rate 9.5 N/mm

Straight-wound, constant rate

Supplied as a pair

Free length 237 mm

Öhlins part number 08633-95

Öhlins recommends oil 01330 for this application

Air gap 150 mm as specified by Öhlins

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Applications

Öhlins lists this spring for Honda CBR1100XX (1997–2006). The rate is chosen for rider weight and riding style, so treat the list as a starting point: a spring of these dimensions fits any fork that takes them.

Dimensions

Free length 237 mm, inner diameter 28 mm, rate 9.5 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. On a sports machine the front end is loaded hardest under braking, and the rate decides how much of the stroke that uses.

Fitting

Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: ABE (Germany) for the applications Öhlins lists. The document ships with the springs, so no individual inspection is needed.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup.
