This is the change a suspension technician makes first, before touching a single click.

Key Features

Free length 370.5 mm

Öhlins part number 04802-70

Supplied as a pair

Inner diameter 25.5 mm

Straight-wound, constant rate

Measured spring rate 7 N/mm

196 mm of usable stroke

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

The 25.5 mm bore and 370.5 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 7 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.

Specifications

Brand: Öhlins

Part Number: 04802-70

Spring Rate: 7 N/mm

Free Length: 370.5 mm

Inner Diameter: 25.5 mm

Stroke: 196 mm

Construction: Straight

Packaging Unit: Pair

Country of Origin: Sweden

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0949/7831/0410/files/ForkSprings-v2_579f0a5d-1be0-481c-8b5f-bc743976d636.png?v=1788863728
