This is the change a suspension technician makes first, before touching a single click.

Key Features

Öhlins part number 08436-65

Inner diameter 43 mm

260 mm of usable stroke

Free length 452 mm

Supplied as a pair

Measured spring rate 6.5 N/mm

Tapered-wound, constant rate

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 43 mm × 452 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 6.5 N/mm.

Choosing 6.5 N/mm

Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.

Specifications

Brand: Öhlins

Part Number: 08436-65

Spring Rate: 6.5 N/mm

Free Length: 452 mm

Inner Diameter: 43 mm

Stroke: 260 mm

Construction: Tapered

Packaging Unit: Pair

Country of Origin: Sweden

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0949/7831/0410/files/ForkSprings-v2_5d2854c3-dbdd-4bc9-bb69-5569108785d1.png?v=1788864119
