Under braking a soft spring lets the fork run through its stroke and the geometry with it.

Key Features

Öhlins part number 08438-60

Supplied as a pair

Free length 450 mm

Measured spring rate 6.0 N/mm

Inner diameter 38.5 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 38.5 mm × 450 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 6.0 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Fitting

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.

Specifications

Brand: Öhlins

Part Number: 08438-60

Spring Rate: 6.0 N/mm

Free Length: 450 mm

Inner Diameter: 38.5 mm

Packaging Unit: Pair

Country of Origin: Sweden

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0949/7831/0410/files/ForkSprings-v2_7ced4f7d-0bd5-4987-998b-7bf86dff16a2.png?v=1788864141
