Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 38.5 mm × 450 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 5.0 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly.
