Factory fork springs are chosen for an average rider on an average road; few riders are either.

Key Features

Inner diameter 43.6 mm

Öhlins part number 08437-41

Measured spring rate 4.1 N/mm

Free length 455 mm

Supplied as a pair

Manufacture and Tolerance

Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 455 mm, inner diameter 43.6 mm, rate 4.1 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. Expect more sag and more movement — that is the point, not a fault. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part.
