Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Dimensions

Free length 455 mm, inner diameter 43.6 mm, rate 3.9 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 3.9 N/mm

A rate this low belongs on a long-travel machine or under a light rider — it lets the fork use its full stroke instead of riding high and skating over the surface. If the bike rides high and feels harsh over small stuff, the rate is often the reason rather than the damping. A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

Fitting

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part.
