leatt-adv-8-5-helmet-kit-royal-blue-red
Leatt ADV 8.5 Helmet Kit Royal Blue/Red – Adventure Helmet with Goggles ECE 22.06 / DOT

Most adventure helmets ask you to choose: a road helmet that tolerates the odd gravel track, or an off-road lid that drones on the motorway. The Leatt ADV 8.5 in Royal Blue/Red refuses that trade. It arrives as a complete kit, with a photochromic visor already mounted, a second, clear visor, an anti-fog Pinlock 120 XLT MaxVision lens and a Leatt Velocity 4.5 goggle in the same carton, so the helmet can be rebuilt for a border crossing in the morning and a washed-out forest trail in the afternoon.

About the Royal Blue/Red finish

Royal Blue/Red is the loudest of the three ADV 8.5 colourways. The base is a bright gloss white, cut by deep navy panels that sweep back from the chin bar and wrap around the lower rear of the shell. Twin navy pinstripes run over the crown, and flashes of red sit along the flanks and the back, where a large 8.5 and the ADV script identify the model to anyone riding behind you. White carries well in mirrors and in dusk traffic, and the gloss clear coat wipes clean after a muddy stage with a damp cloth. The dark navy sections hide road grime at the chin and the base, which is exactly where an adventure helmet collects it. Red and white show stone chips sooner than a black shell would, which is worth knowing if your bike spends a lot of time on loose gravel.

Four ways to ride one helmet

Leatt calls it a 4-way setup, and it is the practical reason to buy an adventure helmet at all. Configuration one: visor down with the peak fitted, the touring mode for tarmac days. Configuration two: visor removed, peak on, goggle on, the enduro mode for dust, rain and standing on the pegs. Configuration three: visor and goggle together, useful for cold mornings when a mixed route switches surface often. Configuration four: peak removed, visor only, which turns the ADV 8.5 into something close to a road full-face for long motorway legs where the peak would only catch wind. The visor detaches without tools, and the kit includes covers for the visor mechanism so the pivots stay clean and tidy while you run in goggle mode.

Two visors, one anti-fog lens, one goggle

The visor fitted at the factory is photochromic: it darkens in bright sunlight and clears again as the light drops, so one lens covers a mountain pass at noon and a tunnel or a late arrival. The second, clear visor is there for riding after dark, or for anyone who prefers a constant tint. Anti-fog duty falls to the included Pinlock 120 XLT MaxVision, the largest Pinlock size, which covers nearly the whole field of view. The goggle in the carton is the Leatt Velocity 4.5. Leatt does not publish which lens tint ships with the kit version, so we do not name one here.

Shell and 360° Turbine Technology

The outer shell is a composite matrix of three fibreglass-based layers. Leatt's material breakdown puts composite fibre at around two-thirds of the helmet's mass and EPS impact foam at roughly a quarter, with the rest made up of polyester padding and steel hardware. Inside sits the 360° Turbine Technology that Leatt developed in-house: small turbine discs that are designed to deform and rotate on impact. They are Leatt's own answer to rotational energy and should not be confused with other brands' slip-liner systems. Leatt states the turbines reduce peak brain acceleration by up to 30 % and rotational acceleration by up to 40 %, figures from the manufacturer's own testing. An emergency cheek pad release lets medical staff take the pads out before removing the helmet, and the strap closes with a classic double-D ring.

What ECE 22.06 actually checks

The ADV 8.5 is homologated to ECE 22.06 as well as to DOT. ECE 22.06 has been the only European standard allowed for sale since January 2024, and it is considerably tougher than the old 22.05. Instead of five impact points, the lab can choose from eighteen, and it tests at more than one speed. A glancing impact onto an abrasive anvil measures how the helmet handles a glancing blow, and the result is scored with a brain injury criterion that looks at rotational load. Supplied visors and accessories go through the test fitted to the shell. DOT adds the US federal requirement, which matters if you ride or ship to North America.

Weight carried by your neck

Leatt specifies 1,575 g with a tolerance of 50 g for size M/L. That sits between the two ADV neighbours: the ADV 9.5 with its carbon shell is listed at 1,490 g, so the 8.5 asks your neck to carry around 85 g more. On a tarmac day this is hard to notice. Off-road, the peak and the goggle add leverage, and over ten hours of standing, ducking and checking mirrors that difference becomes the most likely reason a rider would step up to carbon. For riders who want photochromic visor, Pinlock and goggle in one box without the carbon shell, the 8.5 sits in the sensible middle.

Fit from three shell sizes

Six helmet sizes run from XS at 53–54 cm head circumference to XXL at 63–64 cm, built on three outer shells. Two head sizes therefore share one shell, and the padding takes up the difference. That is coarser than a helmet with four or five shells: an XS head in a shell shared with S sits inside a little more volume than in a dedicated shell. AMCN named the three shells as the one point it would change. Measure your head at its widest point, just over the brow line, and pick by centimetres rather than by the size label of another brand.

Airflow and wind noise, honestly

ADV Pulse counted three intakes that can be shut and seven outlets. Its tester called the airflow modest but effective, and the front vent slider was hard to move in gloves; AMCN rated the venting excellent. Our reading is that it works well when moving and less well in slow technical sections, as with most adventure helmets. On noise we do not invent a decibel figure. The construction gives the clues: a chin curtain plus cheek padding that seals against your neck, and a shell Leatt developed in a wind tunnel. AMCN's tester was surprised how calm it stayed with the visor open, and ADV Pulse described the inside as cosy and quiet.

ADV 8.5 against its neighbours

Model

Shell

Weight (M/L)

Visors in box

Pinlock

Goggle

Closure

ADV 7.5

Injected polymer

not stated by Leatt

Clear

Ready, lens not included

Velocity 2.5

Double-D

ADV 8.5

3-layer composite

1,575 g ± 50 g

Photochromic + clear

120 XLT MaxVision included

Velocity 4.5

Double-D

ADV 9.5

6-layer carbon

1,490 g ± 50 g

Photochromic + clear

120 XLT MaxVision included

Velocity 4.5 Iriz

Fidlock magnetic

All three share ECE 22.06 and DOT approval, three shell sizes and the 360° Turbine system. The step from 7.5 to 8.5 buys the composite shell, the photochromic visor and the Pinlock lens; the step to 9.5 buys carbon, a four-density EPS liner and the magnetic buckle.

What it does not do

The peak cannot be adjusted in angle, which ADV Pulse noted. Leatt lists no drop-down sun visor; the photochromic visor fills that role. The tint of the goggle lens is not documented. And three shell sizes cover six head sizes, so riders at the very small or very large end should try before committing to a long trip.

Spares and the replacement programme

On this model that matters most for the parts an adventure helmet wears out or loses: visors, peak and pads. The helmet is covered by Leatt's three-year helmet replacement programme for crash damage. Padding and liner can be taken out, are treated to resist bacteria and go in the wash. For intercom fitting, ADV Pulse found speaker pockets and cable channels that made installation quick.

In the box

1x helmet

1x photochromic visor (fitted) + 1x clear visor

1x Pinlock 120 XLT MaxVision anti-fog lens

1x Leatt Velocity 4.5 goggle

1x set of shield mechanism covers (off-road mode)

1x Leatt helmet carry bag

Specification

Helmet type — Adventure (on/off-road full-face with peak, visor and goggle port)

Certification — ECE 22.06, DOT

Shell — Three-layer composite matrix (fibreglass)

Shell sizes — 3 (XS–XXL)

Weight — 1,575 g ± 50 g (M/L)

Safety system — 360° Turbine Technology, emergency cheek pads

Retention — Double-D ring

Visor — Photochromic + clear, tool-free quick release; Pinlock 120 XLT MaxVision included

Eye port — Extra wide for goggles; 4-way setup (visor, goggles, peak)

Communication — Compatible with aftermarket communication systems

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0949/7831/0410/files/leatt-adv-8-5-helmet-kit-royal-blue-red__8.png?v=1793480019
