Why the PAIR System Causes Problems with Aftermarket Exhausts

The PAIR system was engineered to reduce emissions on the factory exhaust by injecting secondary air into the exhaust ports. Once an aftermarket system is installed — particularly a full system without a catalytic converter — the PAIR valve introduces unwanted air pulses that upset the exhaust scavenging cycle. The result is audible backfiring on the overrun, stuttering throttle pick-up and a fuelling map that can never be tuned cleanly because the air mass entering the ports is inconsistent. Blocking the system off at the source is the accepted, permanent solution.
