Why the PAIR System Causes Problems

The secondary air injection system (PAIR) routes fresh air from the airbox into the exhaust tract to assist combustion of unburnt fuel, reducing tailpipe emissions for road-legal homologation. On a standard exhaust this works as intended. However, when an aftermarket slip-on silencer or full race system is fitted, the additional airflow creates lean pulsing in the exhaust, resulting in sharp crackle, popping and misfires on the overrun — behaviour that undermines throttle feel and rider confidence on track.
