They sit on the sides of the tank where the rider's knees press under braking, and they are held on by adhesive. Petrol attacks many adhesives and some pad materials, and left on paint it can dull the finish around them, so a careless top-up can loosen a pad you rely on at the end of every straight. On the F3 800, refuel with the engine off and the bike upright, pour slowly and hold a cloth below the filler to catch drips before they run down the flanks. Close the FC101, then wipe the tank from the top downwards, over and around the pads, and let everything dry. Check the edges of the pads regularly.
