On aluminium, dirt and fuel residue are easiest to remove while they are fresh. Let the bike cool, then wipe the cap and the area around it with a soft cloth and water with a little mild soap, rinse gently and dry straight away. Abrasive pads, polishing pastes and strong degreasers do more harm than good on a machined surface, and a hard jet of water aimed at the filler is never a good idea. Keep grit out of the pawl so it moves freely, and look for damage while you are there.
