The wear happens anyway. Sand sticks to a wet disc and gets between the pads, and each touch of the pedal drags it across the steel. After a sandy race the rear disc can look matt and finely scored, and the pads can lose material much faster than usual. Rinse the rear wheel and caliper with plenty of water rather than wiping them dry, which only rubs the grains across the surface. Then check the pad thickness, and the disc against its printed minimum.
