Roots cross the path at awkward angles, polished by other tyres and often damp beneath a layer of leaves, and a front tyre that is braking as it meets one tends to slide along it rather than climb over. Riders who are quick in the woods on a 250 EXC-F develop a rhythm: brake before the root, release while the wheel crosses it, brake again once it is behind them.
