The usual approach is to find the friction point first, hold it for an instant as the bike begins to move, then let the lever out progressively rather than dropping it. Repeating that exactly needs the lever to meet your fingers in the same place, which is where the adjustable span helps. Set it wearing race gloves, so the take-up begins with the fingers bent rather than stretched. The short blade, made in blue, gold, green, orange and silver, lets two fingers work the lever while two stay around the grip, a hold many racers use at the start.
