Under braking, weight shifts forward onto the front tyre, which is why the front brake can deliver most of the stopping force while the lightly loaded rear tyre contributes far less. Using both, with the front taking the larger share, is the sound approach: squeeze the lever progressively, add the pedal gently, and keep the bike upright and straight while you do it. A well-placed lever makes it more likely that you use it early and with conviction.
