A Multistrada 1200 filters its oil and its fuel, and both circuits are closed: whatever a filter misses stays in the system and gets another chance next time round. Air is different. It is drawn in once, out of whatever the front wheel has just stirred up, and goes straight through the throttle bodies into the cylinders. One element stands in that path and gets no second attempt. The Sprint Filter T12 PM127T12 puts the finest medium the company makes into that position — a dry polyester special non-woven filtering to 7 microns, specified for extreme conditions and unsealed ground.

One pass, one element

Because nothing in that path gets a second attempt, the rating of the medium is the whole of the specification: what it does not hold is in the engine. The other two filters are sealed cartridges, thrown away unseen at an interval printed in a book. This one can be taken out, held up to the light and put back, which makes the level of protection something the owner chooses and keeps choosing, not something the parts catalogue settled in 2015. On a 1200 ridden hard on dry unsealed surfaces, the finest available medium is a defensible answer to a question the standard element does not address.

What that costs in flow

It costs a great deal, and the figure deserves looking at before the part is ordered. Sprint Filter's road-going P08 is rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec and filters at 80 microns; this T12 filters at 7 microns and is rated at 560. Nine to one is the widest gap in the programme, and it exists because retention and flow move in opposite directions, in every medium ever woven or laid. A T12 is not a better P08. It is the specialist end of a range in which the P08 is the sensible default, and on a big twin the flow handed over is real. Fit it because the air demands it, not because seven is a smaller number than eighty.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air does the routine work, applied to the clean side so the dirt leaves by the face it entered. If a stage packs in more than that will move, lukewarm water with a mild detergent lifts the rest; keep rinsing until the run-off is clear. Then let it dry completely in the open — never against a radiator, a heat gun or a flame — and refit it dry. There is no oiling step in the life of a PM127T12. Made for the Ducati Multistrada 1200, 1200 S and 1200 D|air of 2015 to 2017, fitting the unaltered factory airbox in place of the original.
