The retention figure quoted for this weave has a second half that is easy to lose. Sprint Filter's comparison sets 93.13 % of the 100-micron fraction against 76.42 % for a four-layer oiled cotton element — that is, against the other aftermarket answer, not against the paper panel sitting in the Interceptor's airbox right now. Read strictly, the number settles a choice between two upgrades and leaves the comparison with the factory part unpublished. That is worth saying plainly on a page whose job is to sell one of them.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester, single layer, filtering at 80 µm
- Rated 5,050 l/m²/sec of clean cloth — the standard medium of the range
- About double the filter surface of other performance elements, in the series airbox
- Measured at 93.13 % on 100-micron particles; oiled four-layer cotton, 76.42 % in the same test
- No oil at any stage, so nothing can be over-applied and nothing travels downstream
- Washed with air rather than replaced; life-of-the-motorcycle specification, two years of warranty
What the number decides, and what it leaves open
Against oiled gauze the case is measured and clear. Against the original paper panel the honest position is different: paper filters well when new and cannot be brought back once loaded, so the comparison an owner actually wants is not a single figure but a curve across an interval, and nobody publishes it. What can be said without a measurement is structural. This element is cleaned to a repeatable condition; the paper one moves in a single direction and is then discarded. Across nine model years of Interceptor that difference is the argument, not two percentages.
The part that is not arguable
A drop-in filter does not make a standard machine noticeably stronger, whatever it is woven from; that claim belongs to nobody in this category. What the CM196S offers is a resistance that starts low and climbs slowly, because the load spreads over roughly twice the area of other performance elements, and a service item that stops recurring on the parts list. Where roads are consistently dusty the range answers with a 14 µm non-woven at 1,800 l/m²/sec — more retention for less flow, chosen by the route rather than by rank.
Care and cleaning
Dry throughout. An air line laid on the clean side and worked outwards returns the load to the side it arrived from, which is all a surface filter needs for ordinary dust. For a greasy film, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear. Then it dries in open air and only in open air — heat is the one handling mistake that finishes one of these — and goes back untreated. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 across 2018 to 2026. The same number is listed for the Continental GT 650 over exactly those years and for the Bear 650 of 2025 and 2026: three machines on one airbox. Check your model year in the Fitment tab.
