Sprint Filter keeps five media in its programme, and for this airbox it lists two of them: the P08 at 80 microns and the racing F1-85 at 85. Both sit at the open end of the range. There is no 14-micron and no 7-micron option cut for this housing, which quietly settles a question for the owner of a BB3 — a dusty summer or a stretch of gravel road cannot be answered by changing the specification, because there is nothing finer to change to. It has to be answered by how often the element is taken out and cleaned.
Key Features
- Single-layer woven polyester, run dry: no oil when new and none after a wash
- 80 microns of filtration at a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, the road and track setting
- Polyester thread from ø 22 microns upward — a fibre dimension, not the size of the opening
- Roughly twice the filtering cloth of other performance elements in the standard panel
- Replaces the paper panel directly: airbox, ducting and factory fuelling stay as they are
- Serviced and refitted for the life of the machine, with two years of warranty
A range with the fine end missing
Laid out in order, the media form a line rather than a ladder: 85 microns at 15,000 l/m²/sec, 80 at 5,050, 37 at 4,500, 14 at 1,800 and 7 at 560. Every step toward finer retention is a step away from flow, so none of them is simply better than the next — each names a different set of conditions. For this housing only the first two positions exist, and the trade is therefore not on the table. What is left is one well-understood setting and the discipline of returning it to its starting condition.
What frequency does instead
An element ages by the volume of air drawn through it and by what that air was carrying, which is why two BB3s of the same model year can be in very different states. Since the medium cannot be matched to the environment here, the environment has to be read off the element: open the lid after a dusty week rather than waiting for a service date. Cleaning consumes nothing but time, so a short interval costs almost nothing. The limit is worth stating — a panel dropped into an unmodified airbox does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger. It gives back the restriction it caused itself, and keeps that restriction from creeping upward.
Care and cleaning
Hold an air line to the clean face of the PM93S and work outward, so the load leaves by the route it arrived on. When air alone stops being enough, lukewarm water with a little mild washing-up detergent will finish the job; rinse until the water runs clear. Drying happens in open, moving air and nowhere else — no hot-air gun, no radiator and no flame, because heat is what ends a polyester element. It goes back in dry and untreated, with the lid closed onto its seal. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the airbox of the Bimota BB3 built from 2014 to 2019. Seven machines share the part number: the BB3 itself and six BMW models, among them three S 1000 RR windows, the HP4, the HP4 Race and the S 1000 XR. Each is listed with its years in the Fitment tab.
