Take the old one with you. The paper element that comes out of an F 850 GS Adventure weighs almost nothing and packs flat against the base of a pannier, and that is the quiet reason a fine medium is a low-risk choice on a long trip: whatever the T12 turns out to cost on a particular route, the decision can be reversed at a roadside in the time it takes to lift a seat. Very little else specified for an expedition bike can be undone that easily, and none of it can be undone that far from home.
Key Features
- Polyester special non-woven, run dry, filtering to 7 microns
- 560 l/m²/sec of rated flow — the price of the strictest medium on the shelf
- Fits the standard airbox exactly where the original panel sat, without modification or remap
- Oil-free construction, keeping the intake sensors out of the equation
- Around twice the filter area of comparable performance elements
- Serviced with compressed air, carried for the life of the bike, warranted for two years
A decision with a way back
Route plans change more than kit lists do. A trip that was going to be a fortnight of piste turns into a fast tarmac run home, or the dry season arrives three weeks late and the tracks are mud instead of dust. Because the original element stays useful, none of that has to be predicted in advance — label it, keep it flat in a pannier, and let the ground decide which one is in the box. Judging it is straightforward too: the fine mat is what stands between the tracks you have just ridden and the engine, and its condition is visible whenever you have reason to open the lid.
What you would be undoing
The thing being reversed is a real sacrifice, so it is worth naming. This medium filters at 7 microns and is rated at 560 l/m²/sec; the standard P08 filters at 80 microns and is rated at 5,050. Nine parts of the flow become one, in exchange for holding back a fraction of the dust a road element was never asked to catch. Finer is stricter, not superior — the two figures always move in opposite directions — and neither of them describes a power gain. A standard GS Adventure with the PM188T12 in it is not a faster motorcycle; it is a motorcycle breathing cleaner air on the days that matter.
Care and cleaning
Everything the element needs is available at any tyre shop. A line of compressed air held to the clean side drives the dust back out; when that stops being enough, lukewarm water and a little mild detergent will lift the rest, and it is rinsed until the water leaves clear. Then it dries in the air, with no heat of any kind and nothing resembling a flame near it, and it does not go back into the box until it is dry through. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Specified for the BMW F 850 GS Adventure of 2017 to 2026, in the series airbox. Eleven machines in total share this element, from BMW's middleweight F range to the Kove and Voge adventure models built alongside it; the Fitment tab lists every one.
