By Sprint Filter's own account, its filters are the most widely used in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock. That is a manufacturer describing its own position rather than an independent count, and it is worth keeping apart from the things on this page that were measured. What paddock use does establish is a design brief: an element expected to come out, be cleaned and go back in between sessions, which is precisely what a carbon fibre frame and a dry weave are for.
Key Features
- WorldSBK-specification build — carbon fibre frame, dry F1-85 cloth, made to be removed and refitted often
- 85 µm weave with a published flow rating of 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Retention of 95.22 % on 100-micron test particles; the standard P08 weave measured 93.13 %
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns across — a fibre dimension, not the size of the openings
- Replaces the paper panel in the untouched series airbox; no modification, no remap
- Cleaned rather than consumed, and covered for two years from the date of purchase
What transfers to a road 1199 and what does not
The construction transfers. A frame that keeps its shape through repeated washing is as useful in a garage as in a pit box, and a medium regenerated with air is as convenient in either place. The context does not transfer. A race weekend spends real minutes at sustained full throttle; a road machine spends seconds, in bursts, with everything in between at part load. Nothing in the paddock claim alters the plain fact that an insert element in a standard airbox will not make a standard 1199 noticeably faster, whichever cloth is in the frame.
Reading the numbers without a ladder
Finer weaves hold back more and pass less air; coarser weaves do the reverse. That is a trade, and the media in this catalogue sit at different points along it rather than in rank order. R127S F1-85-SBK sits at the open end: the highest throughput published, bought at the cost of the finest filtration available elsewhere in the range. Sprint Filter's comparison also puts four-layer oiled cotton at 76.42 % against these dry weaves, which is a separate point about oil rather than about mesh.
Care and cleaning
The routine is a compressed-air line held to the clean face, blowing outward, so that everything the cloth stopped leaves by the face it arrived at. A wash is the occasional exception: hand-warm water, a mild detergent, a rinse continued until the water is clear. What follows matters more than either — the element dries in ambient air, unhurried, with no heat gun, no radiator and no flame, and it is refitted only once dry, with no dressing of any kind. The cleaning instructions sit under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
Catalogued for the airbox of the Ducati Panigale 1199 under model years 2012 to 2017. The same part covers five further Ducatis: the 899, 959 and 1299 Superquadro twins and the 955 cc Panigale V2 and Streetfighter V2. Individual year windows are in the Fitment tab.
